Does grieving really get easy?

2025/2/8 Edited to

... Read moreWhen you're deep in the throes of grief, the question, "Does it ever get easier?" echoes constantly in your mind. It's a question I've asked myself countless times since my own loss, hoping for a simple, reassuring 'yes.' But what I’ve learned, through the tear-filled days and quiet moments of reflection, is that the answer isn't so straightforward. From my personal experience, it's not that grief suddenly becomes 'easy' or disappears. The raw, searing pain that once consumed every waking moment may eventually dull, but the absence of that person – the feeling of living in a world where there's no you – still breaks my heart every single day. I still miss them so much, their voice, their laughs, their hugs. Those feelings don't vanish; they evolve. Instead of getting 'easier,' I’ve found that grief transforms. It becomes a part of you, like a deep scar that never fully fades but eventually stops bleeding. The sharp edges of initial shock and despair begin to soften. You learn to breathe again, to find moments of joy amidst the sorrow. It’s a process of integrating the loss into your life, rather than trying to move on from it entirely. You don't 'get over' grief; you learn to carry it. So, what does this transformation look like? For me, it has involved several steps: Allowing Myself to Feel: Initially, I tried to push away the pain, thinking if I didn't acknowledge it, it might go away. But I quickly learned that suppressing grief only prolongs it. Allowing tears to flow, expressing anger, or simply sitting with the sadness has been crucial. It's okay to not be okay. Finding Ways to Remember: Instead of avoiding memories because they hurt, I started embracing them. Looking at old photos, talking about them with loved ones, or even visiting places we cherished together helps keep their spirit alive. It’s a bittersweet feeling, sometimes bringing fresh tears, but also a comforting warmth of connection. Seeking Support: I realized I couldn't navigate this journey alone. Leaning on friends, family, or even a grief support group provided a safe space to share my feelings without judgment. Hearing others' experiences made me feel less isolated in my own unique pain. Creating New Routines and Meaning: While the world felt shattered, slowly building new routines and finding small purposes helped me anchor myself. This isn't about replacing the person, but about finding a way to move forward in their honor, incorporating their memory into a new chapter of life. Patience and Self-Compassion: Grief doesn't follow a timeline. There are good days and bad days, and that's perfectly normal. I’ve learned to be patient with myself, to not judge my feelings, and to offer myself the same kindness I would offer a friend. While the ache of missing them never fully dissipates, the way I experience it has changed. It's no longer an overwhelming force that incapacitates me daily, but rather a persistent, sometimes gentle, reminder of the profound love I had. So, does grief get easier? Perhaps not, but we do learn to live with it, to carry it, and eventually, to find strength within our sorrow.

Grieving the loss of someone who’s still alive
Losing someone important to you due to their own choices can be one of the most difficult experiences any human could endure. The sheer part of letting go is the hardest. Why would you let go of someone that’s still there? Doesn’t that show YOU’VE given up? Or maybe you agree to the choice as well?

You think you’re ANGRY. But you’re grieving 🤔
Underneath anger… there’s always grief. And no one ever taught you how to tell the difference. You weren’t “too emotional.” You were grieving. And no one noticed. They said you had “anger issues.” But no one ever asked what your rage was protecting. No one ever saw the child in the fire.
