Traditions I want to start with my family.🍼🚼
As a first time mom who always dreamed of being a mom. I’m all about creating core memories and making my babies childhood magical and full of amazing memories that will stick with them forever. Growing up my mom did her best to keep traditions alive and make our childhood as special as she could. Here are some new traditions I’d like to start with my babies. Would you like to see traditions from my childhood I plan to continue with my family? What are some of your favorite childhood traditions or traditions you love to do with your babies?
1.) Themed Family Nights - these are pretty trendy but I know my creative side can make it extra special and magical. One a month I wanna do family movie night with multiple courses that are tailored to the movie we are watching. With fun mock tails, crazy appetizers, and goofy entrees. Can’t forget dessert for the perfect movie ending.
2.) Birthday Plate - another trendy tradition I’ve been seeing but love. I wanna make my son a hand painted birthday plate for his 1st birthday that I will continue using for him every year on his birthday. Whether to serve his breakfast, cake, or anything this will be his plate. (Was also thinking of making one for him every birthday so he gains a collection but that may be a bit much)
3.) Fun Foods - I wanna make meal/snack time as fun and magical as possible. Especially as toddlers when the babies are just getting used to eating. I feel like this is a fun and exciting way to help teach healthy eating habits for kids and helping them become less picky.
4.) Future Smash Boxes - for these I wanna build and paint piggy banks that cannot be opened. In these boxes the kids will put in any money they get from doing chores, birthday money, or Christmas money, etc. on their 18th birthday or high school graduation they may smash the boxes and use all that money to put towards school, their first apartment, a car, anything they need to head start their future as a young adult.
5.) Document Core Memories - I’ve already started a scrapbook for my son and plan on making one for each of my kids. I also want to film and put together “vlogs” if you will. Just a way to create home videos or family movies. It’s just something so special that once you are older you grow a deeper appreciation for. I want them to have that to look back on and be able to watch together as young adults.
6.) Backyard Camp Out! - during the summer I wanna do movie nights with the projector outside. But to make it extra fun and special I wanna make a whole night out of it. Dad grilling up dinner while the kids play. A sweet movie while eat as a family outside under the stars. S’more’s✨Outfit Details: and spooky stories by the bonfire for dessert. And sleeping in tents outside. I think it could be a very special core memory for the littles to hold near and dear to their heart.
7.) Time capsule chests - Here dad plans on building wooden toy chests for each baby. I plan on painting and decorating each chest for each child. Once they grow up and no longer need their toy chests. I will fill it up with their baby/memory books I’ve been making, my favorite baby clothes outfits I’ve saved, favorite baby stuffed animal and books, or just anything that is special to them and their childhood. I’ll then lock it up and store it away in the attic to gift them when they have their first child. By then not only will everything be a throwback for them but vintage items for their babies with special memories tied to each and every one.
Okay, mamas (and dads!), let's get real for a minute. The dream of starting a family is one thing, but actually being in it, especially as a first-timer, is a whole new world! When I first envisioned starting my family, I pictured all the beautiful moments, but I also quickly realized it's about so much more than just baby snuggles (though those are the best!). It's about laying down the foundation for a lifetime of love, laughter, and connection. One thing I've learned is that 'starting a family' isn't just a point in time; it's an ongoing journey of creating your unique family culture. It's easy to get caught up in the daily grind of feedings, naps, and diaper changes, but I've found it incredibly helpful to intentionally carve out moments that will become those cherished memories. It doesn't have to be grand; sometimes it's the simplest things that weave the strongest fabric of family life. For me, preparing for this journey involved a lot of daydreaming about what kind of childhood I wanted to give my babies – one filled with wonder, security, and a sense of belonging. That's where the idea of traditions truly blossomed. They're like little anchors that ground us, giving us something consistent to look forward to and reflect upon. For example, I've started thinking about how to make even everyday moments special, like fun foods. Imagine making a normal snack time feel like a mini adventure with creative food presentations! It turns a mundane task into a moment of joy and discovery for your little ones. And speaking of memories, I can't stress enough the importance of how to document core memories right from the start. Whether it's a simple journal, quick phone videos, or even starting a baby book, those early days fly by. I wish I'd been even more diligent from day one! It’s not just about capturing milestones, but also the everyday silly moments. You think you'll remember everything, but trust me, sleep deprivation can be a powerful eraser! I've even been inspired by the idea of time capsule chests, envisioning how amazing it would be to look back at tiny clothes and handwritten notes years from now. It’s never too early to start collecting those precious keepsakes. Building your family's identity also means fostering a sense of togetherness. This could be as simple as a designated family dinner night, or something more elaborate like themed family movie nights. The key is consistency and making it something everyone can participate in, even if they're just tiny onlookers for now. These shared experiences, no matter how small, build a sense of unity and belonging that is so crucial as your family grows. Remember, there's no perfect way to 'start a family' or be a parent. It's messy, beautiful, and constantly evolving. The most important thing is to be present, love fiercely, and intentionally create those little moments that will eventually become the rich tapestry of your family's story. What unique little rituals are you thinking of introducing to your family unit?
