If you're anything like me, you're constantly trying to find ways to embrace this energetic phase without completely losing yourself in the process. It truly is a unique time, where every day brings new discoveries and challenges. I’ve learned that it's not about taming the energy, but rather learning to flow with it, finding beauty in the chaos, and making sure my own cup isn't completely empty at the end of the day.
One of the biggest lessons I've learned as a mother to a 2-year-old boy is the importance of channeling that incredible toddler energy. Instead of fighting it, I try to lean into it. This often means embracing outdoor adventures – trips to the park, nature walks, or even just letting him run wild in the backyard. Physical activity isn't just good for them; it’s a fantastic way for us to connect and for me to get a little movement in too! We also have a few go-to energetic indoor games for rainy days, like building blanket forts for an "expedition" or having a dance party to his favorite tunes. These moments, while sometimes exhausting, are often when I feel most connected and "fond of embracing" his vibrant spirit.
Beyond managing the energy, finding practices that support my own self-care & wellness has been absolutely crucial. It’s so easy to pour every ounce of yourself into your child, but I’ve realized that a happy, well-rested mom is a better mom. For me, one of my favorite ways to unwind and recharge is through my passion as a crochet artist. Even if it's just 15-20 minutes during nap time or after he's asleep, picking up my hook and yarn allows me to switch off, create something beautiful, and engage a different part of my brain. It's a small but mighty form of self-care that helps me feel like 'me' again, separate from my identity as 'mom.'
Self-care isn't just about hobbies, though. It’s also about setting realistic expectations, asking for help when needed, and not feeling guilty about taking a breather. I've found that even simple things like a warm cup of tea in silence, a quick shower, or listening to a podcast while doing chores can make a huge difference. I also try to prioritize good sleep when I can – which, let's be honest, is a continuous work in progress with a toddler! These small acts of self-care are like mini-recharges that help me greet the next energetic burst from my two-year-old with more patience and a more positive mindset.
Another practical tip I've found helpful is establishing flexible routines. While strict schedules can be hard to maintain with an energetic toddler, having a general rhythm to our day provides a sense of predictability for both of us. This includes meal times, nap times, and even designated play times, which helps manage expectations and reduces meltdowns (for both of us!). It helps create a framework within which we can still be spontaneous and embrace the "energetically" changing nature of a toddler's day, but with a little more grounding. Embracing motherhood, particularly with a vibrant 2-year-old, is a learning curve, but by focusing on connection, realistic expectations, and consistent self-care, it truly can be the most rewarding experience.
