Struggling wardrobe
I’ve spent so many years mourning and ignoring myself, my image and health that I stopped caring what I look like.
I can’t wait to not be a #student anymore so I can work and not be on a low fixed income anymore.
I’m putting in effort again in 2025 to build up a #capsulecloset that I can pull endless looks from. This plan also includes not buying fast #fashion at all.
This makes my #wardrobe worth it in the end for me because each piece will cost me a bit of change, but at least I know it’s comfortable, can be tailored, and can be reworked or etc., for someone else in the future.
Even though I’m not comfortable 100% in the clothes that I own right now, I know that the clothes that I owned before moving for #gradschool was worth getting rid of.
They didn’t fit or they were like hand me downs that were worn out. I kept what worked for me in my closet still and I got rid of the rest.
You know that feeling when your closet is packed, but you still feel like you have nothing to wear? I've been there, trust me! It’s easy to fall into the trap of impulse buys, especially with the siren call of fast fashion. But I’m ready for a change, and if you’re reading this, maybe you are too. Building a capsule wardrobe, or a capsule closet as some call it, isn't just a trend; it’s a lifestyle shift. So, what exactly is a capsule wardrobe? Think of it as a highly curated collection of versatile clothing items that can be mixed and matched to create a multitude of outfits. The idea is to have fewer, higher-quality pieces that truly represent your style and fit your lifestyle, rather than a closet full of things you rarely wear. It's about intentionality and making getting dressed a joy, not a chore. For anyone looking to revamp their wardrobe, here are some practical steps I’m focusing on for my own 2025 transformation: Declutter Ruthlessly: This is probably the hardest but most crucial step. Pull everything out of your closet. Yes, everything! Create three piles: 'Keep,' 'Donate/Sell,' and 'Maybe.' Be honest with yourself. Does it fit? Is it comfortable? Do you love it? Have you worn it in the last year? If the answer is no to most of these, it’s time to let it go. I found so many things that were hand-me-downs or just didn't suit me anymore, and getting rid of them felt incredibly freeing! Define Your Style & Needs: What kind of clothes truly make you feel good? What’s your daily routine like? Are you mostly casual, professional, or somewhere in between? Think about your favorite colors, silhouettes, and fabrics. This helps you understand what you actually need and prevents you from buying things just because they’re 'in style' or on sale. For me, coming from a student lifestyle, I'm thinking about what my post-student life will look like and what clothes will support that. Create a Shopping List: Once you know what you have and what you need, make a list of essential pieces that will fill the gaps. This helps you shop with purpose. Focus on timeless basics first – good quality jeans, versatile tops, a classic jacket, comfortable shoes. These form the backbone of your capsule. Invest in Quality (Not Quantity): This is a game-changer. Instead of buying ten cheap tops, consider investing in two or three well-made ones that will last. As I mentioned in my own journey, I’m prioritizing pieces that are comfortable, can be tailored, and will stand the test of time. It might feel like a bigger upfront cost, but it saves money and reduces waste in the long run. Plus, quality pieces often look and feel better. Embrace Versatility: Each item in your capsule should ideally be able to be styled in multiple ways and for different occasions. Think about how pieces can be dressed up or down. A simple black dress can go from a casual day out to an evening event with just a change of accessories. Revamping your wardrobe to create a capsule closet is a journey of self-discovery and conscious consumerism. It’s about building a collection that serves you, makes you feel confident, and simplifies your life. It won't happen overnight, but every intentional step you take gets you closer to a wardrobe you truly love.
