1. You feel exhausted even after a night of sleep.

Your body has been in a chronic stress state for so long making it difficult for your mind to fully calm and rest. This causes cortisol to spike & prevents deep & restorative sleep.

2. You feel on edge & anxious when you’re resting.

Your nervous has been trained to believe it’s only worthy or capable when it’s performing. This makes rest seem like a threat.

3. You believe you have to hustle & be perfect in order to reach your goals.

You’ve subconsciously been tying your self worth and confidence to your output. Meaning the second you slow down, your nervous system panics. Confidence dips & energy vanishes.

4. You feel like no matter what you do, nothing goes right.

System overload. When you have been in a prolonged period of stress your nervous system kicks into survival mode. This makes your brain believe no matter what you do, it’s never good enough. It will always look for the next milestone to achieve . This happens when you don’t create a sustainable routine that incorporates functional rest.

5. Feeling hopeless & like things will never change.

The longer you stay in the survival mode the more your dopamine disappears. This overtime leads to emotional shut down or being “numb”. Not because you don’t feel but because your nervous system has been so stressed for so long that it burns out trying to protect you & show up in a capacity it can no longer sustain.

These are all signs of being in the burnout cycle. It starts with feeling like you need to push harder, then you feel the exhaustion creep in. Slowly your confidence dips. Then before you know it you find yourself numbed out and trying to find anything that makes you feel stable again.

Tying your confidence strictly to accomplishments creates a stressful feedback loop, causing anxiety when performance dips. Implementing sustainable routines with intentional rest and self-compassion breaks this cycle. For example, scheduling regular breaks and allowing yourself imperfection can ease the nervous system's burden. When everything seems to go wrong despite efforts, it often signifies a system overload where the brain is stuck chasing the next goal, unable to feel satisfaction. Functional rest—which involves activities that genuinely rejuvenate you without pressure—can reset this pattern. For me, nature walks and hobby time were essential for rebalancing. Lastly, prolonged stress can deplete dopamine, leading to numbness or emotional shutdown. It’s vital to recognize these symptoms not as personal failures but as signals your nervous system is overwhelmed and in need of care. Seeking supportive resources, like grounding exercises or professional guidance, can facilitate recovery. Incorporating these insights into daily life fosters resilience and healing. Remember, healing your nervous system is a journey that nurtures your entire well-being, and it’s never too late to start nurturing yourself with rest, compassion, and mindful support.
