🏝️ One Perfect Couple by Ruth Dare
Why is Ruth Ware so inconsistent? I was obsessed with her last book, but almost didn’t finish this one. A scientist whose career isn’t doing so hot decides to go on a reality tv competition with her wannabe actor boyfriend. A storm hits the boat on their way to an island for the show and the survivors end up stranded on a deserted island. Then the murders start. That sounds like a dynamic concept for a thriller. Instead, it is 1) extremely slow and 2) predictable and 3) lazy writing. Not sure that I’ll read Ware’s next book.
💋 Not in Love by Ali Hazelwood
The foreword by the author explains that this book is different than her previous contemporaries. The characters’ issues and backstories are grittier and their relationship is steamier. Yepppp. She isn’t exaggerating. I’ve seen a lot of reviews saying this is too much of a departure, and is their least favorite of Hazelwood’s books. Funnily enough, for the same reasons, this is one of my favorites! The characters are believable and multifaceted. The relationship drama isn’t dependent on misunderstandings. I hope Ali Hazelwood writes more books in this vein.
