As someone who has journeyed through self-acceptance and body positivity, I can attest to how societal expectations about women's bodies affect mental health. Many people believe that a flat stomach is the only sign of fitness or beauty, but that simply isn’t true. Women’s stomachs naturally contain 11 to 14 vital organs, including the liver, stomach, intestines, and reproductive organs, which impact the shape and size of the abdomen. For years, I struggled with feeling ashamed of my natural body shape due to constant exposure to unrealistic images across media that promote flat, toned stomachs as the only acceptable form. This perspective can be damaging and exclude the reality of healthy body diversity. Appreciating the complexity inside our bodies has been a game-changer for me. Learning about the anatomy of the female stomach helped me embrace my curves and understand that bloating, fullness, or a rounded belly is normal—especially during different times of the month or after eating. Instead of focusing on conforming to an impossible standard, I shifted towards nurturing my body with balanced nutrition, movement I enjoy, and positive self-talk. If more people understand that expecting a flat stomach all the time disregards essential organs and bodily functions, it can reduce stigma and promote better mental wellbeing for women everywhere. Embracing our natural bodies, with all their beautiful intricacies, helps foster a healthier, kinder environment for self-love and feminism.
