Okay, so I just finished "Reckless Girls" by Rachel Hawkins, and I have to be honest, I was a little let down. You know that feeling when a book promises an exhilarating island getaway with a dark twist, and you just know it's going to be your next obsession? That's what I felt going into this one, especially with the gorgeous cover teasing a remote paradise. The premise itself is super compelling: Lux McAllister and her boyfriend, Nico, take a job sailing two women, Brittany and Amma, to the mysterious Meroe Island in the South Pacific. This island supposedly has a history filled with shipwrecks, cannibalism, and even rumors of murder – talk about an atmospheric setting! Once they arrive, they discover another couple, Jake and Eliza, already anchored there, seemingly living the dream on their sleek catamaran. So, you have six strangers, beautiful scenery, and a whispered past of danger. What could go wrong, right? My expectation was a slow burn, building tension, and a truly unpredictable unraveling of secrets. The book description itself sets up this intriguing dynamic of multiple characters with hidden reasons for seeking an escape. You’d think with "six strangers" and an island "goes way off course," the suspense would be immediate. However, I personally found that the build-up was quite slow, almost meandering. I kept waiting for that chilling moment, that twist that would make me gasp, but it felt like the real action, the truly "reckless" part, only kicked off in the final chapters. It kind of felt like I could predict what was going to happen, which always takes a bit of the fun out of a thriller for me. I wanted to love the characters, especially Lux, given her backstory and desire for adventure after a family tragedy. And the dynamic between Brittany and Amma, or Jake and Eliza's rocky relationship, had so much potential for intrigue. But I felt like some of these character revelations, and the secrets about their pasts, were hinted at a bit too obviously, making the eventual reveals less impactful. The isolated Meroe Island is depicted vividly, and its dark history is repeatedly mentioned, but I wished it played a more active role in creating a sense of dread throughout the story, rather than just being a backdrop. Don't get me wrong, Rachel Hawkins is a talented writer, and her prose is always engaging. If you're someone who enjoys a more character-driven story that gradually unpacks layers of deceit and hidden motives, and you don't mind a slower pace, then "Reckless Girls" might still be a good read for you. It's definitely a modern take on the classic "locked-room mystery" but on an island. However, if you're like me and you crave a fast-paced, heart-pounding thriller with shocking twists from beginning to end, this one might leave you wanting a bit more. The ending does deliver, tying up the loose ends of a missing person and a tragic death, but I just wish the journey there had been a bit more thrilling. All in all, a decent read, but not quite the nail-biter I hoped for.
