12 hours labor in KKH
It all started on a Sunday morning around 8:30 am. I noticed some leakage and thought it might be my water bag, so I called a friend to check. Turns out, it was! I told my husband to pack our things, had a quick shower, and we headed to KKH, arriving around 9 am.
By 10 am, they confirmed my water bag had burst and I was sent to the labor ward. I was only 2 cm dilated, and the initial pain from the cervical checks was intense—I immediately asked for an epidural, which thankfully was painless.
From 10 am to 3 pm, I was only at 3 cm. A registrar, Alex Chuang, came in and helped me progress to 4 cm by 4 pm. By 7 pm, I was 6 cm, and finally, 10 cm by 8 pm. Around 9 pm, I started learning how to push with less epidural.
Big thanks to Alex Chuang, the registrar, who guided me through labor and basically helped push my baby out from the outside. By 10:15 pm, my baby was finally here!

My doctor, KT Tan, told me that Alex did 80% of the work during my labor, and I only did 20%. Without him, natural birth would’ve been almost impossible!

Also, knowing when and how to request an epidural can significantly ease pain without hampering the natural birthing process. I also found that preparing a hospital bag early, staying hydrated, and having the emotional support of loved ones helped me endure the long labor. The journey truly began the moment I noticed the water bag leaking—the initial shock soon turned into immense gratitude for the experienced healthcare providers. Overall, KKH’s approach to natural labor is highly supportive, blending expert medical care with compassionate encouragement. For expectant mothers, this can make a huge difference in confidence and birth outcomes. My heartfelt thanks go out to the entire team at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital who made my delivery a positive memory.
