Fashion Police

... Read moreIt’s funny how often the phrase 'MY OUTFITS AREN'T THAT REVEALING' pops up in my head when I'm styling my characters, especially in games like FFXIV! We’ve all been there, right? You put together a look you absolutely love, feeling confident and stylish, only for someone to comment on it being 'too much' or 'overly revealing clothing.' It makes you wonder, where do we draw the line, and who gets to be the 'fashion police' anyway? For me, choosing an outfit, whether it's for my Warrior of Light or even a real-life cosplay, is about expressing a certain vibe or character. Sometimes, that means embracing designs that might be considered bold or 'revealing.' I think there’s a huge difference between intentionally provocative outfits and designs that simply feature more skin due to the style or the character's original depiction. For instance, a classic fantasy armor might have cut-outs or be more form-fitting, and that’s part of its aesthetic, not an invitation for judgment. It's about how you feel in it, and how it represents your character’s identity, not just how much skin is showing. The discussion around 'revealing cosplay outfits' is a hot topic, both in-game and in the real-world cosplay community. On one hand, many believe in creative freedom and the right to wear what makes you feel good and authentic to your character. We spend so much time crafting our characters and their stories, and their appearance is a huge part of that. To be told your chosen attire is 'overly revealing clothing' can feel like a direct critique of your creativity and personal taste. On the other hand, some argue about maintaining a certain level of modesty or appropriateness, especially in public spaces or family-friendly events, or even just in a game's general chat. It often boils down to context and intent, and sometimes, the subjective eye of the beholder. What's perfectly acceptable at a private photoshoot might be viewed differently at a public convention, and what looks great in a screenshot might draw comments in a bustling city-state. I often find myself asking, 'Is this actually revealing, or is it just different from what someone else prefers?' It's easy to fall into the trap of letting others' opinions dictate your style. But ultimately, personal expression in gaming and cosplay should be a joyful experience. If you’re comfortable, confident, and not violating any explicit rules or guidelines of a platform or event, then your choice of attire is valid. It's a form of artistic expression, and like any art, it invites discussion, but the final decision should always rest with the creator. It’s about understanding the community you’re in and being respectful, but also standing firm in your creative choices. In games like FFXIV, there’s a huge emphasis on glamours and personal style, and generally, people are quite accepting of diverse looks. But even then, you'll sometimes encounter someone with a strong opinion on what constitutes 'overly revealing clothing.' My personal take? As long as you're comfortable, confident, and not making anyone genuinely uncomfortable or breaking rules, rock whatever makes you feel like the ultimate hero (or villain!) you envision. Your character, your style! What are your thoughts? Have you ever had your outfits judged, and how did you handle it? Share your experiences and tips below!
