P2 - Can't find a reliable freight forwarder? Sometimes that's on you!

In my experience handling shipments from China for Amazon FBA, one of the biggest challenges is trusting the competence and responsibility of a freight forwarder. It’s common to feel completely reliant on them, but this mindset can leave you vulnerable to unexpected delays and surcharges. What really helped me was shifting perspectives: instead of expecting my freight forwarder to manage everything flawlessly, I mapped out every detail of the shipping process myself. This means listing all possible hiccups, whether related to consolidation, dropshipping, or full container loads (FCL). By clearly defining shipping needs, I was able to ask more targeted questions and uncover potential risks or hidden fees before finalizing any agreements. Another key point is understanding that not all freight forwarders are the same. The forwarder suited for first-mile pickups might not be competent for international consolidation or customs clearance. Matching the right forwarder to each stage is crucial. Lastly, I always treat the freight forwarder as a tool executing my plan—not the one making decisions. This proactive approach allowed me to maintain control over timelines and costs, significantly reducing stress and surprises during shipping. If you regularly handle shipments from China or manage Amazon FBA logistics, adopting these strategies will save you time and money, and help ensure your inventory arrives when expected.
