Freeforms
Hey everyone! I'm so excited to share my freeforms journey with you. It's been a truly rewarding experience watching my hair transform naturally. If you're considering starting your own freeforms, or just curious about the process, you've come to the right place! My goal is to give you a real, no-filter look into what it takes to grow beautiful, authentic freeform dreadlocks. So, you want to know how to get freeforms? The beauty of freeforms lies in their natural evolution. The most common method, often called 'neglect,' simply involves allowing your hair to naturally mat and lock with minimal intervention. However, there are ways to gently encourage the process without forcing it. For those with curlier or afro-textured hair, coil method or basic comb coiling can kickstart loc formation. Some people also use towel rubbing, but it's important to be gentle to avoid potential damage. The key, in my experience, is minimal manipulation and letting your hair do its thing. I started by simply washing and gently separating my hair to prevent large mats, letting it dry naturally and observing its unique pattern. The freeforms journey isn't a race; it's a marathon that truly teaches you patience. What you see on social media, like that perfectly styled young man with dreadlocks, might not always be the reality, especially in the early stages. My own experience taught me to embrace the imperfections. Your hair will go through different phases: budding, maturing, and finally, full locs. Don't expect perfectly uniform dreadlocks overnight, or even ever – that's the charm of freeforms! Embrace the frizz, the unruly phases, and the uniqueness that comes with natural growth. It’s a process of self-discovery and letting go of conventional hair standards. Caring for your freeforms is simpler than you might think, but consistency is key to healthy growth. Here are some of my top freeform hair tips: Washing: Don't skip washing! Clean hair actually locks better. I use a residue-free shampoo and focus on my scalp, gently cleansing my locs. Rinse thoroughly to ensure no product buildup remains. Separation: Gently separate your freeforms at the roots to prevent them from merging into one big mat. I usually do this after washing when my hair is slightly damp and easier to manage. Moisture: Keep your scalp and locs moisturized with light oils (like jojoba or argan) or a rosewater spray. This is crucial for all hair types, especially for curly or afro freeform dreads, to maintain elasticity and prevent breakage. Freeform Haircut: While freeforms are about natural growth, occasional trims to remove straggly ends or shape your locs can be beneficial. I usually just snip off any really long, loose hairs that bother me or get in the way. Even for short freeforms, a little shaping can make a big difference in how neat and intentional they look. Protection: Sleep with a satin bonnet or pillowcase to reduce frizz, lint accumulation, and friction that can thin your locs. Embracing freeforms is about embracing your natural self and your unique beauty. It's a journey of self-expression, patience, and learning to love your hair in its most authentic state. I hope these tips from my own freeforms journey help you on your way. Happy locking!
