Replying to @Jenny, with an a Let’s talk about it. 💭

There’s a pattern we seriously need to break — this idea that Black-owned businesses have to be perfect every single time in order to be worthy of our support, while we let chain restaurants and non-Black establishments fumble the bag daily and still go back without hesitation.

It’s wild to me how quick people are to write off a Black business after one less-than-perfect experience. Yes — no one should be disrespected or have their money mishandled. Our Black dollar matters. Our standards matter. But holding our community to impossible standards while offering grace to everyone else? That’s not accountability — that’s harmful.

Let me be clear: I showed my experience at The Pink Plate Café because I don’t lie to my audience. I’m going to show what is, not just what looks good on camera. But I didn’t post it to bash or shame — I shared it because I believe in full stories, not one-sided narratives. The grand opening was hectic (as many are), it was hot, it was packed, and things didn’t go as planned. But that doesn’t mean the vision isn’t there. That doesn’t mean the food wasn’t good. And that absolutely doesn’t mean I won’t be back.

Because I am going back. I believe in giving people, especially our people, a chance to show the fullness of what they offer. And I will continue to show up for Black-owned businesses, not because they’re perfect, but because they matter. Because growth deserves grace. And because I’d want the same for me.

Let’s normalize lovingly holding each other accountable — and giving space for redemption, not cancellation. If we say we love our community, let’s show it in how we show up, even when things aren’t perfect.

🖤 Support Black businesses. Not just in moments of perfection, but in moments of growth.

... Read moreIn discussions about supporting Black-owned businesses, it’s crucial to recognize the importance of grace and growth instead of demanding perfection from the outset. The experience shared about The Pink Plate Café’s grand opening highlights a scenario many businesses face: hectic opening days that may not go flawlessly but still demonstrate passion, vision, and potential. Black-owned businesses often face a disproportionate level of scrutiny compared to their non-Black counterparts. While customers might overlook occasional missteps from chain restaurants or larger establishments, the Black business community frequently faces immediate judgment, which can hinder growth and success. This double standard is not only unfair but can also perpetuate detrimental cycles where Black entrepreneurs feel less empowered to take risks or improve, fearing swift cancellation by their own community or supporters. Supporting Black-owned businesses means more than celebrating peak moments; it means being patient and understanding during the journey. It means offering constructive accountability driven by love and genuine desire to see businesses succeed. Such support helps cultivate a business environment where owners can learn from mistakes without fear of being ostracized. Businesses like The Pink Plate Café, which are open to feedback and committed to returning stronger, embody resilience and transparency. Their willingness to welcome customers back for a more relaxed and complete experience shows a dedication to community and excellence that deserves encouragement. Furthermore, holding all businesses accountable to the same standards creates a balanced marketplace where customers can trust the service and quality they receive without bias. Black dollars matter, and investing in Black businesses fuels economic growth and diversification in communities. Thus, embracing both the challenges and triumphs of Black-owned businesses fosters inclusivity and equity that enrich the customer experience and community as a whole. Ultimately, the conversation should shift toward normalization of giving space for redemption instead of rushing to cancellation. Loving accountability, combined with ongoing support, paves the way for sustainable growth. By showing up consistently—not just when things are perfect—customers demonstrate genuine care that empowers Black entrepreneurs to thrive and innovate over time.

The problem is a lot of times we don’t give each other grace!! I had a NOT SO GOOD experience at an Asian/Black Fusion restaurant in West Philly on the day of their grand opening, however it’s been a while & I can’t wait to give them another chance ❤️
