we’re not afraid of screen time over here 🤪
— especially in this season of working from home with a newborn and a toddler.🥲
I’ve relied on it more than l’d like to admit... but I’m giving myself grace.
That said, I am trying to reduce it by planning out simple activities for my toddler — some she can do independently, and some we can do together.
Usually, once she finishes an activity, her imagination kicks in and she moves on to open-ended play. That’s a win in my book. 🫶🏾
If you’re in a similar season, I hope this helps!

Managing screen time while juggling work-from-home duties and caring for a newborn and toddler can feel overwhelming, but having a variety of planned activities can truly ease the challenge. One effective strategy is to set clear guidelines, like no screens past 5:30pm, which helps establish healthy boundaries for children and makes transitions smoother. Creating a rotating schedule of toys and activities also keeps your toddler engaged and curious. For example, sensory play such as a rice bin with hidden toys or a playdough station equipped with cookie cutters and stampers offers hands-on fun that can be both calming and stimulating. These sensory bins foster fine motor skills and imaginative thinking, providing independent play opportunities. Craft activities like sticker collages or rock decorating are simple yet creative projects your toddler can enjoy solo or with a little help. Keeping a running list of go-to toddler activities saved in a notes app can be a lifesaver on days when creativity or energy runs low. Outdoor experiences such as visits to the park or library, setting up a water table, or having a midday bubble bath can break up the day and add variety to your toddler's routine. At-home playful experiments like frozen toy rescues or making homemade playdough further stimulate problem-solving and sensory exploration. Planning one or two activities ahead of time each day, while remaining flexible, provides structure without pressure. This approach supports your toddler's development of imagination through open-ended play once a structured activity is completed. Remember to extend yourself grace during this demanding season and celebrate small wins like independent play and peaceful moments. Incorporating these toddler activity ideas alongside mindful screen time management empowers parents working from home to foster an enriching environment. It’s all about balancing productivity with nurturing and embracing the unpredictable joys of mom life.
