Living abroad often means navigating between two worlds, and for Indonesians like me, embracing cultural identity becomes a meaningful way to stay connected to our roots. Wearing a kebaya, a traditional Indonesian blouse, is more than just donning a beautiful garment—it's a statement of pride and identity. I remember attending events in the US where I wore my kebaya, and it sparked conversations about Indonesia’s rich culture, helping others appreciate its beauty. Snacking on kerupuk, a beloved Indonesian cracker, also serves as a comforting reminder of home. Even when born and raised far from Indonesia, such as in Texas or other parts of America, preserving these cultural elements fosters a sense of belonging and continuity. It reminds us that despite geographic distances, our heritage remains alive. Maintaining culture abroad requires intentionality. Celebrating traditional customs, participating in cultural festivals, and sharing Indonesian food with friends and neighbors help nurture our identity. It's essential that the younger generation, including those from mixed backgrounds, feel empowered to cherish and uphold their cultural legacy. Ultimately, kebaya and kerupuk are not just symbols but bridges connecting our past with our present, weaving cultural pride into daily life as we live outside Indonesia’s borders.
