I smile through the pain
Bipolar disorder is a constant battle of the mind, and it can be debilitating. I’ve missed birthdays, funerals, special events, work, and countless other moments. It took me over a year just to finish my virtual vision board. I’m the queen of motivation and visualization—until I start slipping into a dark place. Some of us spiritual seekers call it the “dark night of the soul.”
Many people think bipolar disorder is just about extreme mood swings, but it’s more complicated than that. Most of us aren’t always sad or irritable; we’re often the life of the party, the comedian of the group, the last person you’d expect to be struggling with suicidal thoughts.
Back in December 2022, I was in the best physical shape of my life, but not because things were going well. I had lost everything and was starting from the bottom—moving from hotel to hotel, lugging around suitcases, and rushing to work early. Physically, I felt strong, but mentally, I was empty, lonely, and lost. All I knew was how to survive. I had to get up early, make plans, focus on my career, and make sure my parents were okay.
Before the house fire, I struggled with attachment issues, but afterward, everything became even more blurry. I realized I wasn’t attached to material things anymore—this was the third time I’d lost everything. Having been evicted twice before, I thought I’d bounce back quickly, but this time, it’s been much harder.
Finally, today, October 2024, I’ve completed my virtual vision board. I took the time to ask myself, “What do you really want?” To anyone feeling lost or in pain—whether you’re a man, woman, or child—keep taking care of yourself. Find little ways to smile. Maybe it’s a cold shower, a long walk, or blasting your favorite music. For me, pouring myself into my career, something I already loved, has been a key part of my healing and growth.
I’m not fully healed—this is just the beginning. But I’m still here, and I’m still trying.
