El DeBarge!
I had the privilege in honoring legendary band “Switch” in a BET special, honoring late great brothers Bobby and Tommy DeBarge. We were also graced with the presence of their younger brother EL who sang You and I led by Bobby as they both have very similar falsetto registers! This was a🔥🔥🔥 moment!
That night at the BET special, seeing EL DEBARGE live and hearing his incredible falsetto, really got me thinking about the enduring legacy of the DeBarge family. It wasn't just about that one performance of 'You and I'; it was a powerful reminder of their impact on music. For anyone who loves classic R&B, the 'DeBarge 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of DeBarge' is an absolute must-have. When I think about what makes a 'greatest hits' collection truly shine, it's how it captures the essence of an artist's career. This album, or any similar compilation, would undoubtedly feature their iconic dance-pop hits like 'Rhythm of the Night' and 'Who's Holding Donna Now,' alongside the smoother, heartfelt ballads such as 'All This Love' and 'I Like It.' These songs aren't just tracks; they're soundtracks to so many memories for people, myself included. They showcase the incredible harmonies and the unique blend of pop, soul, and R&B that defined the DeBarge sound. And then there's El DeBarge's solo work! His 'greatest hits' are a journey in themselves. Beyond the group, his individual artistry truly blossomed. Who can forget the infectious energy of 'Who's Johnny' or the soulful plea of 'Love Me in a Special Way'? His falsetto, which I heard so beautifully that night, is his signature – a vocal instrument that's instantly recognizable and has influenced so many artists. It's that distinct vocal quality that makes his music so timeless and continues to draw new listeners to his work. It’s funny how an artist’s impact can extend beyond their music into pop culture. When I hear people mention 'Jim Carrey as El DeBarge,' it just goes to show how iconic El's presence truly was. Carrey's impersonation, particularly his exaggerated dance moves and lip-syncing to El's distinctive vocals, was a huge moment on 'In Living Color.' It wasn't just a comedic sketch; it was a testament to how deeply El DeBarge had resonated with audiences that he became a figure ripe for parody, yet always with an underlying sense of admiration for his unique style. It cemented his status as a true pop culture legend, showing that EL DEBARGE wasn't just a musician, but an icon whose influence was widely recognized and celebrated, even through humor. It's this blend of musical genius and cultural impact that makes their story so compelling, and why their music continues to be cherished today.
