Huge spider 🕷

When I first heard that spiders in Vietnam were 'huge,' I honestly thought it was an exaggeration. But let me tell you, it's absolutely true! My first encounter was in a rural area near Da Lat, and I spotted what looked like a dinner plate-sized creature on a wall. My heart nearly jumped out of my chest! It turns out, many of these giants are often Huntsman spiders. They're incredibly fast and can be quite startling due to their sheer size and leg span, but thankfully, they're generally not aggressive towards humans and their venom isn't considered dangerous. I've also seen some incredible Golden Orb-weaver spiders, especially in forested areas. Their webs are truly engineering marvels, glistening in the sunlight, and the spiders themselves can have bodies several inches long, not even counting their legs! A lot of people ask if these large spiders are dangerous. While a bite from any big spider can be painful, most of the common large species in Vietnam, like the Huntsman, are more interested in catching insects than biting people. I always recommend being cautious, though, and never trying to handle them. They're part of the natural ecosystem here, helping to keep insect populations in check. You'll find them almost everywhere, from the lush Mekong Delta to the central highlands, and even sometimes in urban gardens. They love warm, humid environments, so don't be surprised to see one near an outdoor light at night, waiting for moths. One memorable moment was seeing a massive one scurry across our guesthouse ceiling in Hoi An – definitely kept me on my toes! It was a moment of pure shock, then fascination. If you're traveling to Vietnam and are a bit squeamish about spiders, my advice is to keep screen doors closed, check your shoes before putting them on (a good habit anywhere with insects!), and remember that they're generally harmless pest controllers. They're just part of the incredible biodiversity here. Seeing them up close, after the initial shock, actually became quite fascinating! It's a vivid reminder of how diverse and wild nature can be, even in unexpected places. So, yes, spiders are indeed huge in Vietnam, and it's an experience you won't soon forget!
