Hair 101: Hydration vs Moisture
Hydration is water content and retention while moisturization is maintaining said water content by sealing and locking it in. Water is essential to hair (and overall) health so please don’t skimp on it. When a lot of us girls go to the salon the first thing we hear is that our hair is dry (dehydrated) and that’s because there wasn’t enough water in the hair. SOAK it. You can use however many leave ins, oils and creams as you can but if it’s not also hydrated, it won’t matter as much.

Many people confuse hair hydration and moisturization, but understanding how they work together is essential for maintaining healthy hair. Hydration refers to the amount of water content in your hair and how well your hair retains it. On the other hand, moisturization involves sealing that water within your hair strands to prevent evaporation and dryness. The phrase "your hair needs more water" is a vital reminder that dry or brittle hair often results from dehydration, not just a lack of oils or creams. Water is the ultimate source of hair health, promoting elasticity and preventing breakage. Without proper hydration, applying oils or leave-in conditioners alone won’t fully restore your hair’s condition because these products work best when water is already present in the hair. To boost hydration, incorporating water-rich treatments like hydrating hair masks or misting your hair with water regularly can help. After hydrating, applying oils or creams helps lock in that moisture, preventing it from escaping the hair shaft. This step is crucial for all hair types, especially for those with naturally dry or chemically treated hair. Salon professionals often highlight dehydration as a cause for dull and lifeless hair, emphasizing soaking hair well during washing or treatments. However, it’s important to balance hair care routines tailored to your hair type and environment. Hot weather, hard water, and harsh shampoos can strip hydration quickly, so using gentle, sulfate-free products can protect hair moisture. Finally, sustaining hair hydration contributes to overall hair growth and scalp health. When your hair’s water balance is optimal, it strengthens from root to tip, reducing split ends and breakage. For daily maintenance, drinking plenty of water, using moisturizing shampoos, and incorporating sealants like natural oils ensure your hair stays resilient and vibrant. Following these hydration and moisturization principles will help in your #hairgrowthjourney and maintain luscious, healthy locks over time.
