Photog Language 101

As someone who has been involved in photography for years, I can say that the language photographers use is almost like a secret code. Words like "bokeh," "golden hour," "chimping," and "stop down" might seem puzzling to outsiders but are everyday terms for us. For instance, "bokeh" refers to the quality of the out-of-focus areas in a photo, especially the way light is rendered, which greatly affects the aesthetic. Another favorite term is "chimping," which describes the habit of checking every shot by looking at the camera LCD screen immediately after taking a photo. It’s a funny but common behavior among photographers wanting to make sure they nailed the shot. We also talk about "stop down," which means adjusting the aperture to a smaller opening to increase the depth of field. This lingo helps professionals communicate quickly during shoots.
