Under the hood, protecting the engine and transmission is key. While heavy reinforcement is often against rules, ensuring your cooling system is robust is crucial. I ran an auxiliary fan and a heavy-duty radiator. Keeping transmission lines cool and protected was another focus – a small cooler and shielding can make a huge difference in endurance. Inside, the car gets stripped bare. Remove everything flammable – seats, carpet, headliner, plastic trim. I installed a racing seat with a five-point harness, welded directly to the roll cage, which keeps you secure. The steering column often needs modification to prevent it from pushing into you during a frontal impact. Good visibility is vital too; remove all glass and replace the windshield with a sturdy screen or bars. My first derby was a blur of adrenaline and metal.
