... Read morePublished in 2018, 'The Poppy War' quickly became a sensation in the fantasy genre, praised for its intricate storytelling and rich world-building. R.F. Kuang draws inspiration from Chinese history, especially the Second Sino-Japanese War, to craft a narrative that explores the moral complexities of war and power. The protagonist, Rin, faces numerous challenges as she discovers her shamanic powers while obtaining a place at the prestigious Sinegard Academy. Throughout the trilogy, themes of identity, trauma, and the impacts of colonialism are examined in a thoughtful, impactful manner. In addition to its compelling plot, the novel has received accolades for its portrayal of a strong female protagonist and its commentary on contemporary issues such as racism and mental health. Readers often find themselves deeply engaged with Rin's journey as she grapples with the implications of her powers and the societal expectations placed upon her. For those seeking recommendations, 'The Poppy War' is often compared to works like 'The Hunger Games' and 'Six of Crows', making it a fantastic pick for lovers of dark, thought-provoking fantasy tales. Don't miss out on this literary masterpiece that continues to resonate with a diverse audience across cultures and generations.

but I think it’s a fantasy series worth reading
how many of you guessed the series before i revealed it? the poppy war is a grimdark military fantasy series, and it has a lot of disturbing elements. it doesn’t shy away from the realities and horrors of war, so if you find that content upsetting i would not recommend picking up these books.
