My grandpa passed away.. 🕊️
When I was younger my grandpa was diagnosed with cancer. We share a name.. Katsumasa. My middle, his first. It means ‘victorious one’ — when he was earthside, he was a strong man. A man of virtue. He was nearly recruited by a yakuza boss for being a tough fighter. He turned it down to take care of his budding family and to pursue his real passion: singing opera. My grandma supported him to learn in Italy. He came back to Japan and taught students in Tokyo. He had many recitals and even released an album. Fast-forward to 2025.. he’s no longer here.. but his grandson (me) would also follow his dreams for a career in music. It’s been 16 years since I’ve started.. and I feel like a massive shift is about to take place. My name is Jayme Katsumasa Carroll a.k.a. @Jayme Fortune and one day the world will sing these songs with me. #musiciansoflemon8 🎶
My grandfather's journey as an opera singer was not just a personal passion but a beacon of inspiration that has influenced my life. He pursued his dreams in Italy, leaving behind a legacy that resonates with those who knew him. The world of opera is vast, and it’s fascinating how it connects cultures. Many artists incorporate their heritage into their musical expressions, just as my grandpa did. His story exemplifies resilience and determination, attributes that anyone pursuing a creative path can admire. Additionally, collaborating with artists from Japan felt like a tribute to him, bringing his spirit closer to my ongoing musical endeavors. Many aspiring musicians often grapple with their influences and inspirations, searching for ways to honor their roots in their work. It’s this blend of personal history and artistic expression that often creates the most authentic music. As I reflect on my journey, I encourage others to explore their family histories and let those tales inspire their art. Whether through lyrics, melodies, or performances, acknowledging where we come from can infuse our work with depth and authenticity. I cherish the thought that my music may reach a broader audience, inviting them to share in not only my story but also the legacy of my grandpa's passion for the operatic arts.
