Title: Dear Martin

Author: Nic Stone

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Review:

This book regaled me of the harsh reality of being an African American male living in the white man’s world. Seven-teen year old Justyce McAllistar is faced with many problems no one of color should have to face and yet we do face almost everyday. This book was powerful, heartbreaking, revealing and it was thought provoking as I delved into the minds of men who are faced with many injustices due to the hands of white police officers hands. Nic Stone dove into the problem of racial profiling, racial injustice, and how a small insignificant matter over nothing can turn into something more deadly. Justyce had the chip of the world on his shoulders, while guys in his neighborhood saw him as an ‘Uncle Tom’ sell out guys at his school stereotyped him as a thug. However, Justyce was neither he was just a smart dude that found a way to rise above people’s hypocrisy and stereotypes and become the man he wanted to be. Although I hated that Manny had to get killed off, but at the same time that is what we need to fight for more.

🎀Fave Quote🎀: “ You can’t change how other people think and act, but you’re in full control of you.”

... Read moreWhen I first picked up Nic Stone's 'Dear Martin,' the cover immediately caught my eye. Seeing the striking image of a young Black male in a red hoodie, coupled with the impactful quote from John Green calling it 'Powerful, wrenching, and compulsively readable', truly set the stage for what was inside. It's no wonder the book has garnered so much attention, even earning a visible 5-star rating on the Lemon8 Book Club graphic I noticed. The visual representation perfectly encapsulates the raw and urgent narrative that Nic Stone masterfully unfolds. Delving into the story, I found myself completely engrossed in Justyce McAllistar's world. His character traits are incredibly complex and relatable. He's a bright, ambitious student, striving to rise above his circumstances and societal expectations, yet consistently battling the stereotypes unfairly projected onto him. Justyce’s struggle to reconcile his identities – the Yale-bound scholar versus the 'thug' label placed on him by some – is a poignant representation of the dual consciousness many young Black men experience. He tries so hard to emulate figures like Martin Luther King Jr., journaling his thoughts to Dr. King in an attempt to find guidance, which adds another layer to his internal conflict. The portrayal of racial injustice and profiling in 'Dear Martin' felt incredibly raw and authentic. Nic Stone doesn't shy away from the difficult conversations. The incidents Justyce faces, from being handcuffed by police for an act of chivalry to the constant microaggressions, are gut-wrenching. They highlight how easily an innocent situation can escalate into a life-threatening one due to prejudice and systemic bias. It really forces you to confront uncomfortable truths about how deeply ingrained these issues are. One of the most heartbreaking aspects of the book, which stayed with me long after I finished reading, was the tragic fate of Manny Rivers. Manny's character is so vital to Justyce's journey; he's his best friend, his confidant. Their friendship, and the brutal way it's cut short, serves as a harsh reminder of the real-world consequences of racial violence. It’s a pivotal moment that ignites a deeper fire in Justyce, pushing him towards more profound understanding and activism. This part of the story, though painful, is crucial for understanding the full scope of what Nic Stone aims to convey about the fight for justice. Overall, 'Dear Martin' by Nic Stone is more than just a story; it’s an essential dialogue starter. It’s a powerful exploration of identity, privilege, and the enduring fight for justice that resonates deeply. For anyone looking for a book that challenges perspectives and sparks meaningful reflection, this novel, lauded by authors like Jason Reynolds and Angie Thomas, is an absolute must-read. It definitely earned its 5-star rating in my book, leaving me with so much to ponder about our world and how we can work towards a more equitable future.
