... Read moreAs a fellow working mama navigating the beautiful chaos of life, I completely get the challenge of balancing everything. When I first started my journey as an amateur homesteader, fresh into being a new mom, honestly, it felt overwhelming! The idea of an 'attempting a slow life' seemed like a distant dream, but I've learned a few things that truly make a difference.
First, don't aim for perfection, aim for progress. My homestead isn't picture-perfect, and my house definitely isn't always spotless, but it's *ours*. I focus on small, consistent steps. For example, instead of trying to bake everything from scratch every week, I pick one or two things I genuinely enjoy doing, like making sourdough or a batch of muffins. This way, I still get that homemade goodness without burning out.
For other busy mamas out there, especially those starting their own 'homestead' journey, whether it's a full farm or just a few patio plants, I've found that breaking down tasks is key. Say you want to grow some veggies. Start with herbs on a windowsill! Or if you're trying to integrate more outdoor time with family, plan one dedicated 'nature walk' or 'garden play' session a week. It doesn't have to be hours; even 30 minutes makes a difference.
Another huge breakthrough for me was realizing the power of community. As a working mom, it's easy to feel isolated. Connecting with other women who are also balancing careers, raising families, and maybe even dabbling in homesteading has been a lifeline. We share tips, vent, and celebrate small victories. This support system helps create that 'safe space' not just for my family, but for me too.
And for those attempting a 'slow life' amidst a fast-paced world? Itās more about intentionality than speed. It's choosing to read a book for 15 minutes instead of endlessly scrolling, or truly savoring that cup of coffee on the porch before the day begins. It's about being present with your sweet girl or husband, even if it's just for a few precious moments. For me, grocery shopping has even become a mindful activity ā planning meals, thinking about where our food comes from, and enjoying the process.
My biggest advice? Be kind to yourself. There will be days when the homestead feels like too much, the work pile is high, and the kids are extra spirited. On those days, remember why you started this journey: to create a rich, fulfilling life for yourself and your loved ones. Welcome to this adventure, mamas! Let's build a supportive community where we can all learn and grow together.
