My TBR is a graveyard of good intentions.
Oh my goodness, can anyone else relate to the feeling that your 'To Be Read' (TBR) pile is less of a list and more of a looming tower of literary guilt? For me, it truly feels like a graveyard of good intentions, brimming with books I was so excited to acquire but haven't quite gotten around to. You know, those moments when you see a 'USA TODAY BESTSELLING' novel, maybe something by a captivating author like Adalyn Grace, or a highly anticipated fantasy like 'A NOVEL OF ELFHAME,' and you just have to have it? Next thing you know, it’s sitting serenely on your shelf, gathering a fine layer of dust alongside dozens of its unread companions. It’s a common plight among book lovers, and honestly, it can be a bit overwhelming! So, why do our beloved TBR piles gather dust? I’ve been doing some soul-searching (and shelf-staring) to figure out my own reasons. First, there's definitely the 'buying more than reading' syndrome. Sales, recommendations, beautifully designed covers – they all conspire against my wallet and my reading schedule. Then there’s mood reading; sometimes I pick up a book with the best intentions, only to find my current mood doesn't match its genre. I might have been super excited about a dark fantasy, but today I just want a cozy romance. And who hasn't felt intimidated by a particularly chunky novel, even if it's by a celebrated author like Achel? Life, of course, also gets in the way. Work, chores, social commitments – they all eat into precious reading time. Plus, sometimes a reading slump hits, and suddenly, even the most enticing story feels like a chore. But I'm determined not to let my bookish graveyard stand forever! I’ve been trying a few strategies that you might find helpful too. One thing I’ve started is a 'TBR Jar.' I write the titles of all my unread books on slips of paper, put them in a jar, and then pick one out when I finish a book. It takes the pressure off deciding and adds a fun element of surprise. Another approach is to participate in reading challenges – sometimes a themed challenge or a book club can provide the motivation needed to pick up those neglected titles. I'm also learning to embrace the 'Did Not Finish' (DNF) philosophy. It’s okay to put a book down if it’s not working for you, rather than forcing yourself through it and potentially burning out on reading altogether. I also try to set realistic goals. Instead of aiming to read ten books a month, maybe I'll focus on just two from my existing pile. Sometimes, having a buddy read can make a huge difference – discussing a book with a friend keeps you accountable and makes the experience more engaging. And honestly, just carving out dedicated reading time, even if it's just 20 minutes before bed, can slowly but surely chip away at that pile. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, right? What about you? Does your TBR pile resonate with this 'graveyard of good intentions' feeling? What are some of the books on your pile right now, perhaps some you bought after seeing them as a 'USA TODAY BESTSELLING' title? And more importantly, what are your secret weapons for tackling that ever-growing stack? I'd love to hear your advice and book recommendations!
