HOW TO LAYER: a decal with permanent vinyl!

I know, the idea of layering permanent vinyl can seem daunting, but I promise you, with a few tricks up your sleeve, it's totally achievable and incredibly rewarding. So, yes, you absolutely can layer permanent vinyl, and I'm going to walk you through how I do it to get those crisp, professional-looking layered decals, just like my awesome Michael Myers's Hello Kitty design! First things first, what exactly do you need? Beyond your trusty Cricut Explore (or Maker!), you'll want your different colors of permanent vinyl, a cutting mat, a weeding tool, a scraper or brayer, and some good quality transfer tape. Trust me, the right tools make all the difference when you're aiming for perfection. Here’s my step-by-step guide on how to layer vinyl decals: Design in Cricut Design Space: This is where the magic starts. Make sure your design is ready for layering. If you have separate color elements that need to align, consider using the 'Align' and 'Group' functions. For complex multi-layered designs, I often use registration marks (small squares or circles placed outside the design area) to help me line up the layers perfectly. Cut each color layer separately, making sure to select permanent vinyl settings – I usually use the 'Premium Vinyl' setting with slightly more pressure for a clean cut. Weed Each Layer Carefully: After cutting, meticulously weed away all the excess vinyl from each layer. Take your time here – a clean weeded design is much easier to layer. This is especially important for intricate details. The Actual Layering Process: This is the part everyone worries about! I like to start with the largest or bottom-most layer of my design.
