SACHIKO, 2020
I've always been captivated by the concept of beauty, especially as portrayed in different cultures. When I started exploring digital art with Procreate, I found myself drawn to Japanese aesthetics, particularly the art form known as *bijinga*. The piece I shared, 'SACHIKO,' created in 2020, is a true reflection of that deep fascination. For those unfamiliar, bijinga literally means 'pictures of beautiful people' and boasts a rich history in Japanese art, dating back centuries. These artworks often depict women in elegant poses, showcasing their elaborate kimonos, intricate hairstyles, and refined expressions. More than just portraits, they capture an idealized vision of charm, grace, and inner beauty that was highly valued in Japanese society. I find it incredibly inspiring how these traditional artists could convey so much emotion and elegance with such delicate brushstrokes, often using woodblock prints or paintings. It’s a remarkable testament to their skill and cultural understanding. My personal journey with 'SACHIKO' was about bringing this classic sensibility into a modern digital medium. Using Procreate on my iPad allowed me immense freedom to experiment with colors, textures, and brushwork in a way that felt both fresh and respectful of the original bijinga spirit. I spent countless hours refining the details – from the gentle curve of her jawline to the subtle shading that gives her face depth and character. The year 2020, when I completed this piece, was a time of significant global changes, and I wanted 'SACHIKO' to embody a sense of serene resilience and timeless grace amidst the flux. Creating her was almost a meditative process for me, a way to find calm in chaos. When I think about what makes 'japanesebeauties' so compelling in art, it's not simply about physical attractiveness. It's the profound emphasis on serenity, poise, and a certain elusive grace that permeates their depiction. Bijinga art excels at conveying these qualities, often highlighting the quiet strength and elegance of the subject, and that's precisely what I aimed for in 'SACHIKO.' I truly believe that art can bridge cultural gaps, offering new perspectives and fostering deeper appreciation. For fellow digital artists reading this, my advice is to immerse yourself in the art forms you admire. Study the masters, understand their techniques, and then find your own voice. Procreate offers so many tools that can mimic traditional media, allowing for endless creative possibilities. Don't be afraid to blend old and new. Through my 'SACHIKO' Procreate artwork, I hope to share a glimpse into this captivating world and perhaps inspire others to explore the beauty of traditional Japanese art forms through a contemporary lens. It's a journey of continuous learning and appreciation, and I'm thrilled to share a piece of it, created in 2020, with you all!
