My first marathon here in Puerto Rico

1/9 Edited to

... Read moreAfter tackling my first marathon in Puerto Rico, I can honestly say this island offers so much more than just stunning race routes. If you're thinking of visiting, whether for a race or just for a vacation, here's what I loved and what you should know to make your trip truly special! First, getting around: I found renting a car was super helpful for exploring beyond the main city of San Juan. The roads are generally good, and it gives you the freedom to discover hidden beaches, vibrant towns, and local eateries that might be off the beaten path. Just remember to drive on the right side of the road! Navigating was quite easy with GPS, and I loved the spontaneity it allowed. When it comes to accommodation, I stayed near the coast, which was perfect for morning runs and quick dips in the ocean to cool down. There's everything from luxurious resorts with all the amenities to charming guesthouses and boutique hotels. You can definitely find something to fit your budget and travel style. I’d recommend booking in advance, especially during peak season or around popular events like marathons. Beyond the race, I made sure to dedicate time to explore Old San Juan. The colorful colonial buildings, cobblestone streets, and historic forts like El Morro and Castillo de San Cristóbal are absolutely captivating. Wear comfy shoes because there's a lot of walking involved, but every corner reveals a new photo opportunity or a quaint shop. The history here is palpable, and I spent hours just wandering and soaking it all in. And the food! Oh my goodness, the food in Puerto Rico is an experience in itself. You have to try mofongo; it's a staple, typically made with mashed plantains, garlic, and savory broth, often served with pork, chicken, or seafood. I also fell in love with local empanadillas (savory turnovers) and the incredibly fresh seafood. Don't be afraid to try the little roadside stands or 'kioskos' – that's often where you find the best authentic flavors and a taste of true local life. If you're into nature, El Yunque National Forest is a must-see. It's the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System, and hiking through its lush trails was an incredible experience. The waterfalls are beautiful, and the unique sound of the coqui frogs provides a magical soundtrack, especially at dusk. Just be prepared for rain showers; it is a rainforest after all! My advice for anyone planning a trip to Puerto Rico: embrace the vibrant culture, be ready for some incredible food, and definitely take time to explore beyond the main tourist spots. Whether you're chasing a personal best in a race or just looking for a relaxing escape filled with adventure, Puerto Rico delivers an unforgettable experience that will leave you wanting to come back for more. It truly is a gem in the Caribbean!
