Stepping into a counseling internship is such an exciting time, but it also comes with its own unique set of considerations – and that includes what kind of makeup to wear! I know for me, finding that perfect balance between looking professional, feeling comfortable, and still expressing myself has been a learning curve. Since my skin has been acting up lately, I've really leaned into natural, skin-friendly routines, and I wanted to share why I think this approach is perfect for counseling. First off, as counselors, our main goal is to create a safe, trusting, and non-distracting environment for our clients. While makeup can be a wonderful tool for self-expression, in this professional setting, it’s often best to keep it subtle. A natural look helps ensure that the focus remains entirely on the client and their needs, rather than on anything that might be perceived as overly bold or distracting. It's about projecting professionalism, approachability, and authenticity – letting your true self shine through without any barriers. My go-to principles for 'counselor makeup' center around comfort and confidence. When you're sitting with clients for hours, the last thing you want is makeup that feels heavy, smudges easily, or irritates your skin. That's why I prioritize lightweight, breathable products. For my base, especially with my acne-prone skin, I opt for light-to-medium coverage foundations or tinted moisturizers. Letting a bit of my natural skin texture show through actually makes me feel more relatable and genuine, which is so important in building rapport. Speaking of skin-friendly products, I recently discovered a few gems that have been total game-changers for my counseling days. For a lightweight, dewy finish that still offers enough coverage but lets my skin breathe, I’m a huge fan of TOWER 28 beauty products, especially their tinted moisturizer or concealer. It feels amazing and doesn't irritate my skin, which is a big win when you're dealing with long hours and needing to feel comfortable and confident. For eyes, I keep things very neutral. A little bit of mascara, maybe a thin line of brown or black eyeliner close to the lash line (sometimes just tightlining!), and a touch of a neutral eyeshadow shade is usually all I need. Nothing too dramatic that could draw attention away from eye contact. For lips, hydration is key! I always carry a tinted lip balm or a natural-toned lip gloss in my bag. It adds a touch of polish and keeps my lips feeling comfortable throughout the day, without needing constant reapplication or worry about bright colors transferring. Finally, a little bit of blush to add a healthy flush and well-groomed brows to frame the face complete the look. It's all about enhancing, not concealing. This routine helps me feel put-together and ready to focus on my clients, which is what truly matters.
