What does this mean for Lemon8?

Did anyone receive this message this morning? This can make sense why they have been slowing down on the prize giveaways and not been sending people their prizes after they win.

What does this mean for Lemon8, now that tiktok is taking complete control. No more post like these? They are getting rid of the ability of privating our post. Getting rid of dms as well which makes no sense because tiktok has dms? Unless it’s because it is combining with Tiktok, so we will be using Tiktok Dms? Is it going to be videos over here only? I have a feeling this has something to do with the alleged official date that Tiktok is set to be banned January 19th, 2025.

The algorithm is so different on tiktok compared to Lemon8, I have never went viral on Tiktok. But I have many posts that have gone viral on Lemon8. I never had high interactions with people on any app like Lemon8. Lemon8’s environment isn’t too negative as well.

But for Tiktok to be taking over. And they didn’t give a choice. I had a feeling this would happen. Someone mentioned this to me before on one of my posts that this could happen. However, I didn’t think it would happen so soon.

Lemon is over.

... Read moreThe news about Lemon8 being powered by TikTok from November 20, 2024, has definitely stirred up a lot of questions, especially regarding our privacy and how we manage our content. I've been thinking a lot about what these changes, like the disabling of private posts and DMs, mean for us creators. It's a big shift, and it makes me want to be extra careful about my privacy settings, not just on Lemon8 before the merge, but also on TikTok itself. Since the ability to make individual posts private on Lemon8 seems to be disappearing, it’s more important than ever to understand how privacy works on TikTok. When I first heard about this, my mind immediately went to, "How can I control who sees my content now?" Here's what I've found and what I'm doing to prepare: First, let's talk about your TikTok account privacy settings. While individual Lemon8 posts won't be private anymore, you can still set your entire TikTok account to private. This means only approved followers can see your videos and posts. To do this, I go to my TikTok profile, tap the three lines (hamburger menu) in the top right corner, select 'Settings and privacy,' then 'Privacy,' and toggle on 'Private account.' It's a simple step, but it gives me a better sense of control over my overall content visibility. Next, I've been diving into privacy settings before posting on TikTok. Even with a public account, you have options for each video. When I'm about to post, on the 'Post' screen, there’s an option for 'Who can watch this video.' I can choose 'Everyone,' 'Friends,' or 'Only me.' This is super helpful because it allows me to decide the audience for specific content, similar to how I used to think about private posts on Lemon8. I also check 'More options' to control who can comment, duet, stitch, or download my videos. It’s not exactly the same as a private post, but it's the closest equivalent for managing individual content visibility. The change regarding DMs (Direct Messages) is another big one. With Lemon8 DMs being disabled, it looks like we'll be relying on TikTok's messaging system. On TikTok, you can control who can send you messages. In 'Settings and privacy' > 'Privacy' > 'Direct messages,' I can choose 'Everyone,' 'Friends,' or 'No one.' I usually set mine to 'Friends' to avoid unwanted messages, but sometimes I open it up if I'm collaborating or expecting a specific message. It's a good idea to review these settings now. Finally, the data sharing aspect between Lemon8 and TikTok is something I'm keeping a close eye on. The announcement mentioned that TikTok account data, including login, user ID, username, age, profile, followers, and inferred interests, will be used to personalize Lemon8. This means our activity on both platforms will be more interconnected. I'm making sure my TikTok profile accurately reflects what I want to share and that I'm comfortable with my 'inferred interests' being used. It's all about being proactive and understanding what information is being linked across platforms. For anyone concerned, remember you can still use the old Lemon8 app until May 2025 without logging in with TikTok, but after that, accounts and data will be deleted if you don't link up. It's a lot to take in, but staying informed about these privacy settings helps me feel more prepared for the upcoming changes.

“You’re not the only one who got that message — the whole app feels stressed today 😭 I’m hoping Lemon8 clears things up soon because the rumors are wild.”
