“Security Lizard” is a 30-foot-long recycled-metal sculpture created in 1995 by St. Petersburg artist Paul Eppling.
It was built from old car parts, streetlights, traffic signals, license plates and other found objects, weighs more than 4,000 pounds, and took Eppling about six months to construct.
The lizard sits on the roof of the City of St. Petersburg Fleet Maintenance Building at 1800 7th Ave. N. Its enormous tongue grabs a giant firefly that doubles as a spotlight, cleverly tying the sculpture to the building’s security function. It is especially visible from I-275.
