Sometimes, placing a block in a seemingly less optimal spot now can open up better opportunities for future, larger blocks. Second, prioritize clearing lines. This might sound obvious, but it's easy to get caught up trying to make perfect squares or fill corners. Focus on completing full lines whenever you can, as this is how you keep your board clear and your score climbing. Third, keep your board open, especially the corners and edges. It's tempting to fill up the middle, but if you block off your edges, you'll find it harder to place those tricky L-shaped or T-shaped blocks later on. Always try to maintain space for larger pieces. Fourth, look for combos. Clearing multiple lines at once (either horizontally and vertically simultaneously, or two horizontal/vertical lines with one block) gives you bonus points. Train your eye to spot these opportunities! Finally, don't be afraid to sacrifice. Sometimes, you get a block that just doesn't fit anywhere well. Instead of forcing it into a spot that will completely jam your board, place it where it does the least damage, even if it means not clearing a line immediately. Keeping options open is key to a long game.
