First Time Actively Practicing Advent!

I first discovered the idea of advent in college!

The church I went to, to my knowledge, didn’t practice it.

The church I am currently trying out has everyone the congregation with a 25 advent devotional - and I am excited to practice advent for the first time!

They even provide these family advent calendars that I plan to have my little rip off each day as a way to count down to Christmas ❤️

They have a verse on the back and a question to reflect on!

MY POV: Advent seemed to have been a bit commercialized now and days.. you can get advent makeup calendars, toy car calendars, hot sauce calendars - even chocolate ones.. you name it!

So I am glad I am trying out advent with using tools that help me and my family REALLY reflect on the reason for the season.

1. Do you practice advent, if so - how?

2. Do you find it meaningful or just something extra to do?

... Read moreAdvent is a beautiful season that invites families to pause and reflect on the spiritual significance of Christmas. One popular tool to enhance this experience is the family advent calendar, which typically includes daily devotionals to help focus on biblical themes. For example, the daily devotions often come with a Bible verse and a reflective question, enabling both adults and children to engage meaningfully each day as they count down to Christmas. Many people find that practicing Advent actively turns the waiting period into a time of spiritual growth rather than just a calendar countdown. While commercialized advent calendars featuring makeup, toys, or chocolates abound, these often lose the deeper purpose of Advent. Instead, choosing a devotional-based calendar encourages families to reflect on Jesus, the reason for the season. Using resources such as "The Family Advent Name Calendar of Day Jesus 1 - Daily Devotions for Advent" can guide families through Scripture and help create lasting habits of faith and reflection. Incorporating discussions prompted by daily questions can also foster meaningful conversations among family members, deepening their connection and shared understanding. Whether you're new to Advent or want to enrich your tradition, consider setting aside specific times each day for reading a verse, discussing its meaning, and praying together. This practice makes the anticipation of Christmas purposeful and spiritually fulfilling. Advent traditions differ among families and churches, but the core goal remains the same: to prepare hearts for celebrating Christ's birth. Actively engaging in Advent by using devotional materials and calendars helps recenter the focus on faith, hope, and love during the holiday season, making it much more than just a festive countdown.
