Who Sang “This Christmas” the Best? 🎶

My dad and I used to go back and forth on this often!! He is adamant that the original is better than Chris Brown’s.. but I beg to differ!

This is a song I MUST listen to each Christmas season. If not.. did Christmas really happen?? 🤣

Chris Brown’s version is Special to me for Multiple reasons:

1. NOSTALGIA: This came out 2 years prior to the whole Rihanna thing so this gives me extra warm fuzzy feels as I reminisce on when he was still “a good guy” in the eyes of the public

2. HE’S ALIVE: This song is a reminder of the one movie Chris Brown was in that he didn’t die 😂

3. I AM IMPARTIAL: I am huge CB fan so I am a bit bias

4. THE MOVIE: The song fits the whole premise of the movie so well and I equally love the movie as much as I love the song ❤️

5. THE SONG IN GENERAL: The song just sounds so good I LOOOVVVEE the way he starts and finishes his rendition!

(He may have oversang it a bit, but he really made it his own)

... Read moreThe song "This Christmas" is a beloved holiday classic originally performed by Donny Hathaway in 1970. Hathaway’s version has become iconic for its soulful and smooth delivery, capturing the essence of warmth and joy traditionally associated with the Christmas season. The original features heartfelt vocals and rich orchestration that have inspired numerous covers over the years. Chris Brown’s rendition of “This Christmas,” released in 2007, stands out for its modern R&B style and polished production. Many fans appreciate his version for the nostalgic memories it invokes, especially since it was released before some of the more controversial events in his career, which adds a sentimental value for certain listeners. Brown’s performance in the Christmas-themed movie "This Christmas" helped integrate the song deeply with festive storytelling, making it a memorable holiday anthem for younger audiences. When comparing the two, Donny Hathaway’s original is praised for its authentic soul and timeless quality, often regarded as the definitive version in many circles. In contrast, Chris Brown’s cover appeals to contemporary listeners who enjoy updated arrangements and vocal flair, even if it sometimes includes more embellished vocal runs. Both versions contribute uniquely to holiday music playlists—Hathaway’s to those who cherish classic soul and tradition, and Brown’s to those who enjoy fresh takes on holiday favorites. Ultimately, the “best” version depends on personal taste, but both renditions keep the spirit of “This Christmas” alive and cherished across generations. Whether you prefer the smooth warmth of the original or the energetic modern spin, "This Christmas" remains an essential track to enjoy during the holiday season. Listening to both can provide a rich, layered festive experience that honors the past while embracing the present.
