How to help with overthinking

2024/2/6 Edited to

... Read moreI used to spend countless hours spiraling, especially when thinking about the future. What if I don't get that promotion? What if my plans fall apart? What if something bad happens tomorrow? It was exhausting, and honestly, it didn't change a thing. My therapist recently shared this incredibly simple yet powerful tool called the 'circle of control,' and it's been a total game-changer for me. Here’s how it works, and trust me, it’s easier than you think. Imagine drawing a big circle. Inside that circle, you list everything about a situation that you can control. Outside the circle, you write down everything you cannot control. The image my therapist showed me even had a balanced stone cairn, which really visualizes finding balance amidst uncertainty. Let's take 'overthinking about the future' as an example. Inside the circle (What I CAN Control): My own actions and efforts today. My attitude and perspective towards challenges. How I prepare for potential outcomes. My responses to unexpected events. Who I choose to ask for support. My self-care routines to stay resilient. Outside the circle (What I CANNOT Control): Other people's decisions and actions. Global economic changes or unforeseen world events. The exact timing or outcome of future opportunities. How others perceive me or react to my choices. Past mistakes (but I can control learning from them!). And yes, the future itself in its entirety. The beauty of this exercise is the clarity it brings. When I find myself lost in 'what ifs' about something far off, I literally grab a piece of paper and draw this circle. It helps me quickly identify if my current worry is even actionable. If it falls outside the circle, I acknowledge it, but then consciously choose to let it go. It’s not about ignoring problems, but about redirecting my energy. Why waste mental energy on things I absolutely cannot change? For instance, if I’m worried about a job interview next month, I can’t control who else applies or the hiring manager's final decision. Those go outside the circle. But I can control my preparation, my outfit, practicing my answers, researching the company, and maintaining a positive attitude. Those go inside the circle. Focusing on what’s inside empowers me and reduces that overwhelming feeling of helplessness. This isn't a one-time fix; it's a practice. I try to incorporate it into my daily routine, especially when anxiety about future events starts to creep in. It helps me to be more present and effective, rather than paralyzed by fear of the unknown. Giving myself permission to not control everything, especially 'the future,' has been incredibly liberating. It’s about accepting uncertainty and focusing on my responses and actions, which are truly the only things I have full command over.
