Dear UX Designers of Lemon8..

Hey all! I wanted to ask anyone on lemon8 who works in UX design some questions. I recently got rejected from an internship I thought I nailed. They were okay with me being a recent grad in Psychology and I even got invited to the second round interview. We did it, and everything seemed great! But I got the rejection email.. how do I even land my first role in this industry? How can I find jobs that for sure will accept me? Should I do nonprofit work first to have more experience? I have some unfinished self started projects in my portfolio..

Many fresh graduates and career-changers find themselves asking how to land that crucial first role given the competitive market. One practical approach is to leverage your background in psychology, as UX design benefits greatly from understanding human behavior and cognitive processes. You can emphasize this unique perspective in your portfolio and interviews to differentiate yourself. To build experience, consider contributing to nonprofit organizations or volunteering for design projects. This not only adds real-world examples to your portfolio but also demonstrates your commitment and ability to collaborate on meaningful projects. Since you have some unfinished self-started projects, revisiting and completing them can showcase your skills and growth over time. Networking within the UX community—both online and offline—can open doors to hidden job opportunities. Engaging in forums dedicated to #uxdesign, participating in local meetups, or connecting with industry professionals on platforms like LinkedIn can provide valuable insights and referrals. Additionally, some job platforms and internship programs specifically target entry-level UX designers and recent grads. Tailor your job search to those opportunities where your educational background and emerging portfolio are valued. Persistence matters; rejection emails are part of the learning curve and can help you refine your approach. Remember, the path to landing your first UX role is often nonlinear. Stay curious, keep practicing your design and research skills, and incorporate feedback to continuously improve your work. Your passion, combined with practical experience and networking, will increase your chances of securing the right position in the UX design field.

You’re honestly doing all the right things already. Rejection sucks, but it doesn’t mean you’re not talented. A lot of people get their first UX role through passion projects + nonprofit/volunteer work, so you’re definitely on the right track. Keep building, keep applying — the right team will see your potential 🤍✨

Dear Lemon 8,
Why not start a winter diary challenge that goes until the first day of spring or a recipe exchange people could participate in for the holidays(or a way to kickoff the new year)? Maybe like for small business Saturday, a challenge to share about their small business or about small businesses in th
