... Read moreWow, February flew by, and can you believe I only managed to read two books? But what books they were! I dove headfirst into Rebecca Yarros's epic Empyrean series, devouring both Fourth Wing and *Iron Flame*. My reading goal for the year is still a hopeful 40 books, so I've got some catching up to do! But first, I absolutely have to share my thoughts on these two dragon-filled adventures.
Everyone was raving about Fourth Wing last year, and I totally get why. From the moment I picked it up, I was hooked. The world-building is just incredible – Basgiath War College, the dangers, the political intrigue, and of course, the dragons! I mean, who doesn't love a story with powerful, intelligent dragons? Violet Sorrengail's journey from scribe to dragon rider was so compelling. I loved watching her overcome her physical limitations with sheer grit and determination. The pacing was relentless, and I found myself staying up way too late just to see what would happen next. Rebecca Yarros really set the bar high with this one, creating such vivid imagery, much like the stunning book covers with their intricate circular motifs.
Then came *Iron Flame*, the much-anticipated sequel. After the explosive ending of *Fourth Wing*, my expectations were through the roof. Iron Flame definitely picks up right where the first left off, throwing Violet and Xaden into even more perilous situations. We get to see more of the wider world, new challenges, and a deeper exploration of the magic system and the lore of the dragons. I appreciated seeing the characters grow and face the consequences of their actions. The stakes felt incredibly high, and there were some truly heart-wrenching moments that kept me on the edge of my seat. The covers, again, are just spectacular, really capturing the essence of the fierce dragons within.
So, the million-dollar question: is Iron Flame better than *Fourth Wing*? This is such a tough one because they're both fantastic for different reasons. Fourth Wing had that initial spark, the excitement of discovering a brand-new, thrilling world. It felt fresh, fast-paced, and utterly addictive. *Iron Flame*, while still action-packed, felt a bit more expansive and perhaps a touch darker. It delved deeper into the emotional turmoil and the larger conflict, which I appreciated. If I had to pick *just one*, I think Fourth Wing might edge it out slightly for the sheer novelty and the intense, singular focus it had. But Iron Flame was an excellent continuation and absolutely essential reading to understand the full scope of Rebecca Yarros's vision. They truly complement each other, but the first book just had that 'wow' factor that's hard to beat.
Now, onto my reading goal! With only two books down in February, I'm definitely on the hunt for more 'ideas books' to help me reach my 40-book target. If you loved the dragons and romance in the Empyrean series, I highly recommend checking out other popular fantasy romance titles. I usually scour #BookTok, Goodreads reviews, and of course, the amazing Lemon8 community for recommendations. Some other authors I've enjoyed lately in similar genres include Sarah J. Maas for her intricate world-building and character arcs, and Jennifer L. Armentrout for her gripping plots and steamy romances. Don't forget to look for books with visually appealing covers that often hint at the fantastical journey within! I'm thinking of diving into some lighter reads next to balance out the epic fantasy. Do you have any suggestions that would help me hit my goal? I'm always looking for diverse and engaging stories, especially those that feature strong female leads or captivating magical systems.
Overall, February was a short but impactful reading month thanks to Rebecca Yarros. While I'm still debating if Iron Flame truly surpasses Fourth Wing for me, both were phenomenal reads that I'd recommend to any fantasy lover. Wish me luck for March – hopefully, I can boost that book count! Let me know your top reads from February or any 'ideas books' you think I should add to my list!
