🍢 A $50+ Japanese “Midnight Diner” in Seattle
— and We Left Only Half Full?
Shinya Shokudō (literally “Midnight Diner” in Japanese) is a restaurant specializing in yakitori and Japanese-style grilled skewers.
Many people probably come here late at night for a relaxing drink and a few bites, but I came for a more practical reason — it’s close to the airport, so I stopped by right after a pickup.
Overall impression: Nice atmosphere, average flavor, slightly pricey.

The interior combines wooden furniture, soft lighting, and paper lanterns — all the classic Japanese touches that create a cozy, back-alley Tokyo vibe. The warm light and intimate layout make it a relaxing spot to sit down and unwind.

🍚 Food Experience
Wagyu Tataki Donburi 🌟🌟🌟
Lightly seared Wagyu slices — slightly overcooked on the edges — tender but not exactly “melt-in-your-mouth.”
The main flavors come from green onion and citrus soy sauce, which mix nicely with the raw egg yolk for a rich umami finish.
We might’ve chatted too long before eating, so by the time we started, both the rice and beef had cooled. I think it’s meant to be “warm rice, slightly chilled beef,” but we missed that perfect balance.
Kushiyaki Combo 🌟🌟🌟
This grilled skewer platter includes beef tongue, duck breast, garlic beef, and pork belly.
The tongue was the most tender; the duck breast juicy; the garlic beef was fine but forgettable; and the pork belly — with its balance of fat and lean.
Seafood Combo 🌟🌟🌟
Four kinds again — Hokkaido scallop (sweet but mild), shrimp (nicely bouncy), eel (rich but overly sweet), and salmon (average).
Overall: well executed, but nothing particularly memorable.

The dishes are refined but portion sizes are small. The flavors are pleasant but not remarkable.
The Wagyu didn’t quite match the buttery texture you’d expect in Japan, and the yakitori lacked that extra spark.
We ordered three dishes for two people — and after spending $50+ per person, we left feeling only about half to two-thirds full.
Maybe the real purpose of coming here isn’t to “fill your stomach.”
According to the restaurant’s website, people come to Shinya Shokudō to share their stories over food — stories about life’s struggles, inequality, and loneliness.
It’s these stories that give ordinary dishes a touch of warmth and humanity.
From that perspective, ordering just a few skewers might already fulfill the restaurant’s true mission.
