I Finally Found a Hidden Gem in Hometown Guiyang

The way I discovered Xibu Matou · Guizhou Yard was purely by chance.

I was back in Guiyang for a short vacation and wanted to try something new — a restaurant I’d never been to before.

After scrolling through online reviews, I stumbled upon this spot tucked away near Liuguangmen — Xibu Matou Guizhou Yard.

It’s a bit off the main road,

but luckily, it’s close to the gym I often go to,

so it wasn’t hard to find at all.

The interior is charmingly traditional,

with bamboo-patterned tabletops that give it a rustic, elegant vibe.

The menu says it’s their signature dish —

“crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside.”

And honestly, that’s exactly how it tasted.

The duck was succulent, the skin beautifully crisp,

but the real magic was in the bed of sticky rice underneath,

soaked through with the duck’s rich juices —

savory, flavorful, and full of depth.

It’s definitely a must-try for meat lovers.

If you prefer lighter flavors,

it might feel a bit rich after a few bites,

so I’d recommend sharing it with friends.

As someone from Guizhou myself,

I couldn’t help but exclaim —

“So this is a new way to eat Changwang!?”

One bite and I was hooked.

The pork blood was silky and tender,

the pork intestine springy and chewy in the best way,

and when mixed with the spicy, oily sauce and rice —

it was pure indulgence.

Yes, it’s rich.

But I still couldn’t stop eating it.

At first glance, it looks like a regular rib stew,

but the texture tells you otherwise —

firmer, leaner, and more intense in flavor.

That’s probably the magic of black-haired pork!

Though it’s called “dry-braised,”

the chef somehow managed to lock all the juices inside the meat.

When it arrived sizzling hot,

I thought it might be overcooked,

but every bite was tender and bursting with rich pork flavor.

Thank goodness for this dish!

Right when the table was heavy with rich meats,

this cool and refreshing plate came to the rescue.

The eggplant was green,

almost blending in with the green peppers beside it —

I could barely tell them apart.

If you blindfolded me, I’d honestly struggle to distinguish it

from a regular purple eggplant in taste.

The peppers weren’t spicy either —

just crisp, fresh, and surprisingly delightful.

We also had a plate of seasonal vegetables,

which happened to be stir-fried romaine lettuce at the time.

When cooked just right, it’s crunchy and refreshing —

I have to mention how thoughtful and caring the service was.

I was dining with my teacher that evening,

and we were so busy chatting that we ate slowly.

The waitress came by several times, gently reminding us to eat while it was still hot.

Later, she even brought over a small portable gas stove

to reheat the dishes that had cooled.

It honestly felt just like eating at home —

when you’re lost in conversation,

and your mom comes by to fuss over you,

reminding you to eat before it gets cold.
