From 🇺🇸, Back Home🇨🇳 to Try Starbucks

In November 2025, Starbucks China transformed from a wholly foreign-owned enterprise into a joint venture in which Starbucks holds only a 40% stake. This shift instantly sparked the curiosity of me—an “expired” overseas student. What role does Starbucks really play in China today?

In my memory, Starbucks in the United States 🇺🇸 is part of the everyday life, tucked into street corners. A $3 drip coffee is the perfect social medium. It has witnessed countless awkward first dates and accompanied many casual coffee chats. It’s the most comfortable opening line of American social life.

But the Starbucks in China 🇨🇳 tells a very different story. A Grande Americano costs ¥27, and some drinks can even climb past ¥40. This turns Starbucks into a place that requires a certain sense of occasion. At the next table, a man and a woman meeting through matchmaking for a blended family cautiously exchanged “chips” like salary, property, and children. Their careful calculations and sharp undertones made me feel, for a moment, as if I’d accidentally walked into a job interview.

📖 What’s even more interesting is the contrast in the “coffee hierarchy.” In the U.S., a plain black coffee is the cheapest and most classic item on the menu. Even in Silicon Valley—one of the most expensive places in the country—a Grande costs only about $3.25. In China, however, the most ordinary iced Americano is often excluded from discount vouchers, forcing you to pay full price. It’s oddly puzzling.

💰 Starbucks in China feels expensive to me. Yet after carefully comparing menus in China and the U.S., the prices seem fairly reasonable once converted by exchange rates—some drinks are even cheaper than their U.S. counterparts. This makes me wonder: perhaps Starbucks hasn’t become more expensive in China; rather, there are simply too many more cost-effective alternatives.

Since I couldn’t bring myself to order an iced Americano, I tried a “localized” creation instead—the Hojicha Latte.

☕️ Hojicha Latte = deeply roasted Japanese green tea + rich milk (+ optional syrup)

>I chose “no sugar,” wanting to experience the pure combination of tea and milk without sweetness interfering with my judgment. I have to admit, the roasted green tea aroma blends surprisingly well with milk. After all, tea is still a far more culturally familiar and widely accepted beverage here.

>🍵 And if you can’t resist a sweet craving, a Matcha Frappuccino is also a solid choice—though for anyone watching their intake, one sip of whipped cream is enough to send the guilt straight to the top of your head.

At this point, it’s no longer just a drink, but a kind of sensory field study on identity, consumption, and culture. This shift in Starbucks’ ownership structure may be quietly reshaping what the brand means on this land.

... Read moreWhen I first returned to China, beyond just observing the atmosphere and pricing differences at Starbucks, I quickly realized that the modern Starbucks experience here is deeply intertwined with its digital presence—specifically, the Starbucks China app. It’s a game-changer, especially for someone like me who was used to the US system, where physical cards or simpler app functions often dominated. The Starbucks China app isn't just about loyalty points; it's practically essential for navigating the local coffee scene. I found myself downloading it almost immediately after my first visit. It’s not just a convenience; it’s where all the magic happens regarding discounts and special offers. Remember how I felt Starbucks in China was expensive? Well, the app is often the answer to finding more "cost-effective alternatives," as I mentioned earlier. You can often find exclusive app-only deals, like buy-one-get-one-free promotions on certain *drinks*, or discounts on specific Frappuccino or Latte creations. Without the app, you’re likely paying full price for that *Grande Americano*, which can feel steep. My personal experience with the app has been incredibly smooth. Mobile ordering is a lifesaver, especially during peak hours. You can customize your drinks exactly how you like them – adjusting sugar levels, adding extra shots, or even specifying ice amounts – all before you even step into the store. Then, you simply walk in, pick up your order from the designated area, and off you go. It saves so much time compared to queuing, which is a common sight in popular Starbucks locations here. Payment is also seamlessly integrated, often through WeChat Pay or Alipay, which are ubiquitous in China. This makes transactions incredibly fast and cashless. The rewards program, Starbucks Rewards, also functions primarily through the app. You earn "stars" with every purchase, which accumulate for free drinks or food items. I've already redeemed a few free Matcha Lattes thanks to my frequent visits! What makes the Starbucks China app truly local is how it adapts to consumer behavior. Beyond mobile ordering and payments, it often features seasonal promotions tied to Chinese holidays or local trends. They even have virtual stores for delivery, which is huge here. If you’re visiting or living in China, getting this app is a top tip for anyone wanting to enjoy Starbucks without feeling the pinch as much. It fundamentally changes the perception of value and convenience. The menu is right there at your fingertips, making it easy to compare prices and discover new localized offerings, much like the Hojicha Latte I tried. It's a testament to how Starbucks has adapted to the digital-first consumer culture in *China*.
