Cathay Pacific: Guangzhou✈️Breakfast Was a Letdown

I’ve always loved Cathay Pacific’s in-flight meals:

Consistent quality and great overall experience every time.

I was really looking forward to their breakfast on this connecting flight from Guangzhou to Hong Kong.

The breakfast for this early flight was shockingly basic💔

Each passenger only got one small grey paper bag containing four items:

▫️Ham & Cheese Sandwich

▫️Macadamia Shortbread

▫️Bottle of water

▫️Wet wipe

🥪I honestly thought to myself:

Even Cathay’s worst sandwich can’t be that bad.

I was so wrong…

This sandwich was just terrible.

The bread was dry, stiff and completely tasteless.

It only had ham, lettuce and cheese inside with barely any seasoning at all.

No nice aroma or texture layers whatsoever.

It lost all the refinement I expect from Cathay’s catering.

It’s just something to fill your stomach, no enjoyment at all.

🍪The only saving grace of the whole meal was the macadamia shortbread.

Individually wrapped square butter cookies that crumble easily when you bite into them.

Rich butter aroma paired with nutty flavour, crispy and slightly sweet.

I get that the flight from Guangzhou to Hong Kong is quite short, so simplified meals make sense.

—

💡Final Thoughts:

I guess my expectations were simply way too high.

This is by far the most underwhelming Cathay meal I’ve ever had.

The letdown hit hard 😮‍💨

Tastes vary for everyone — has anyone actually enjoyed this sandwich?

Drop a comment below!

Fingers crossed Cathay serves proper nice food on my upcoming long-haul international flight!

... Read moreOkay, so my Cathay Pacific breakfast experience from Guangzhou to Hong Kong really got me thinking about in-flight meals, especially on those shorter routes! It wasn't just my flight; it seems many of us have had a 'wet paper bag' moment when it comes to airline food. I used to rely entirely on the airline, but after that dry, stiff, and tasteless ham and cheese sandwich, I've completely changed my strategy. For short hops like Guangzhou to HK, which is barely an hour, I've learned to adjust my expectations. It's truly a 'get you from A to B' flight, and elaborate meals aren't the priority. Instead of hoping for a culinary delight, or even the comforting thought of Cathay Pacific cup noodles (which are usually reserved for longer flights or lounges!), I now plan ahead. I’ve started packing my own snacks – think something substantial yet easy to eat, like a fruit salad, some nuts, or a nice pastry bought at the airport. This way, even if the airline offers just a small 'paper bag' containing a basic sandwich and a bottled water, I know I won't be left feeling hungry or disappointed. And honestly, sometimes the airport food court has some amazing local eats that are much better than any in-flight offering! A quick stop before boarding can make all the difference. Another thing I've realized is that while Cathay Pacific usually has great catering, their short-haul services can vary widely. Don't get me wrong, I still love their long-haul meals! But for routes like HK to Guangzhou, where efficiency is key, the focus is more on getting you there quickly. So, if you're flying this route, or any short regional flight, don't expect a full-course meal. It's often just a light snack to tide you over. The article mentions the macadamia shortbread being the saving grace – and that’s often the case! Sometimes, it's just about finding that one 'gem' in the basic package, like a decent cookie or a refreshing wet wipe to freshen up. I've also seen my fair share of 'Cathay Pacific meme' content online about in-flight food, and honestly, sometimes it hits close to home! While it's fun to joke about, it also highlights a common traveler dilemma: what to do when the food isn't up to scratch. My personal tip? Hydrate well with that bottled water, enjoy the quick flight, and save your appetite for a fantastic meal once you land in Hong Kong. There are so many incredible food options there, you'll quickly forget any 'dry, stiff, tasteless' sandwich you might have encountered. Researching local eateries in Hong Kong beforehand can even add to the anticipation, turning a flight disappointment into an exciting food adventure upon arrival. It’s all part of the travel experience, right? Learning to adapt and make the best of it, even when your breakfast is a bit of a letdown. Sometimes, the best in-flight meal is the one you bring yourself!
