Dreams Don’t Always Come True
The Table is Set
"Welcome back to the porch. Or, more accurately today, welcome back to the card table.
You know, when I was seventeen, living next door to the Matterhorn in Anaheim, I thought life was a Disney movie.
I was the Strawberry Festival Queen, I had everything I needed. I was going to save the world with a paintbrush, a notebook of poems and lyrics I’d written and a Peace Corps application already sent in.
I thought I was playing Authors. But as it turns out, the Dealer had a different game in mind.
He wasn't a mouse in white gloves; he was a riverboat gambler with a deck of cards that had definitely seen some things. And the game? It was Bourrée."

Reflecting on the emotional landscape that often accompanies the shattering of youthful dreams, I find that life’s surprises, though sometimes challenging, are essential for personal growth. Much like the author’s experience of envisioning a perfect world from the vantage point of a sixteen-year-old dreamer, I too once believed fervently that my aspirations would unfold exactly as imagined—only to face unforeseen detours that reshaped my path. The metaphor of the 'Dealer' as a riverboat gambler with a deck of weathered cards resonates deeply; it symbolizes the unpredictability of life’s circumstances and the need for adaptability. In my own journey, I have learned that embracing these uncertainties with resilience and creativity transforms obstacles into opportunities. Whether it’s shifting career plans, unplanned life events, or evolving relationships, these moments compel us to reevaluate who we are and what truly matters. The author’s vivid imagery—the card table replacing the porch and the allusion to a game called Bourrée—evokes the complexity and chance that govern our lives. Like in this metaphorical card game, sometimes we are dealt difficult hands, but it’s how we play these hands, not just what we hoped to receive, that defines our experience. This perspective encourages a mindful acceptance rather than disillusionment. Sharing my personal journey, I recall my own aspirations that transformed over time. Initially fueled by idealistic visions, I faced setbacks that felt like losses in a high-stakes game. Yet, these challenges taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, the importance of self-compassion, and the power of redefining success on my own terms. It was through this adaptive process that I found unexpected joy and purpose beyond my original dreams. Engaging with stories like this encourages all of us to reflect on our growth trajectories. Sometimes, the dreams we cherish don’t manifest as we expect, but the experiences gained along the way enrich our lives in profound ways. By sharing these insights openly, we contribute to a collective understanding that life’s unpredictability, while daunting, can also be a source of strength and transformation.
