July 26th isn't just a date on the calendar for us Liberians; it's a vibrant explosion of joy, pride, and remembrance of our nation's journey! As someone who has grown up celebrating this incredible day, I can tell you there's nothing quite like the spirit of Liberian Independence Day. It's truly a 'hop day' in the best sense – a day to jump up and celebrate our freedom! For my fellow Liberians, this message is for you! I'm gonna wait, I got your attention – get in here, let's talk about July 26th! So, what does this day really look like? Well, for starters, it’s all about family and community coming together. The air buzzes with excitement, and you can almost taste the anticipation of delicious food. Everyone's asking, "What are we eating? What are we cooking this year?" And let me tell you, the answer is always mouth-watering! Think platters piled high with traditional Liberian dishes. We're talking about hearty cassava leaf stew, flavorful potato greens, tender palm butter soup, and of course, perfectly cooked rice. And you can bet there will be plenty of fried fish and chicken seasoned to perfection. It's a feast that embodies our rich culture and hospitality – a true taste of home. Beyond the amazing food, Independence Day is a spectacle of colors and sounds. Many communities organize parades, with people dressed in vibrant traditional attire, waving our beautiful red, white, and blue flag. There's music everywhere – from gospel to hipco, filling the streets with rhythms that make you want to dance. The big question is always, "Where is the celebration going to be held this year?" Whether it's a grand public event with speeches and cultural performances, or a more intimate backyard BBQ with loved ones, the energy is infectious. It’s a day when our entire nation, and indeed our global community, comes alive. It's a day to reflect on the sacrifices made for our freedom and to honor the resilience and spirit of our people. But it's also a day of pure joy, celebrating how far we've come as a nation and looking forward to what's ahead. It's not just in Liberia, either. Our global Liberian community, from America to Europe, makes sure to mark this day with equal fervor. I've heard so much about the vibrant celebrations in places like Minnesota, where our diaspora proudly gathers to keep our traditions alive. Seeing pictures and hearing stories from our people in Minnesota doing their Liberian thing always warms my heart, proving that no matter where we are, our pride for Liberia shines through. As we often say, "Liberia all the way!" This July 26th, I encourage everyone, Liberian or not, to learn a little more about Liberia's journey to independence and how we celebrate.
