I love healthcare 😂

... Read moreWorking a 1:1 overtime (OT) shift in healthcare sounds straightforward at first—especially a 12-hour assignment where a nurse or CNA is assigned to one patient. However, this role is far from easy. Many nurses and nursing students find that these shifts are physically and emotionally demanding due to the constant need to respond to patient care variations and emergencies throughout the day. One main challenge is the frequency of tasks during these shifts. Nurses must frequently get up to attend to the patient’s needs like repositioning, medication administration, monitoring vitals, and responding to any sudden changes in their condition. Even though the assignment focuses on a single patient, the intensity and attentiveness required can make these shifts more exhausting than anticipated. For nursing students and CNAs, these experiences are critical for developing practical skills and resilience. They teach time management, the ability to multitask under pressure, and the importance of vigilant care. The 1:1 ratio also allows healthcare providers to build a closer connection with the patient, improving the quality of care and patient comfort. Overall, 1:1 OT shifts provide valuable real-life insights into the nursing profession. They highlight the physical and emotional stamina needed and reinforce why nursing is a demanding yet rewarding career choice. If you’re preparing for such a role, be ready for long hours, frequent activity, and a steep learning curve, but also for the deep satisfaction that comes from making a significant difference in a patient’s life during these intensive shifts.
