Cochins chickens

Feeding our chocolate mottled Cochin bantams chickens corn in the winter can be beneficial for several reasons let’s talk about it.

🐣🌾 Body Heat Production! Corn is high in carbohydrates, which provide energy that helps chickens generate body heat. This is especially helpful in cold weather when they need to stay warm in negative degrees.

🐣🌾 Energy Boost! Chickens use more energy during winter to maintain their body temperature. The extra calories from corn can help keep them active and healthy.

🐣🌾 Comfort Food! Corn is a favorite treat for many chickens, and providing it can boost their morale during the shorter, colder days.

🐣🌾Nighttime Warmth! Feeding corn as an evening snack allows the digestion process to keep their bodies warm overnight when temperature drop.

... Read moreAs a proud owner of these charming little birds, I've fallen in love with my chocolate mottled Cochin bantams, especially their unique 'bobtail' appearance – it's just adorable! When I first started with chickens, I quickly realized that specific breeds have specific needs, and bobtail bantam Cochins are no exception. They’re known for their docile nature and fluffy appearance, making them fantastic backyard companions, but proper care, especially in colder months, is crucial for their well-being. Beyond just their diet, providing a secure and cozy coop is paramount. These little guys might be hardy, but drafts are their enemy! I always make sure their coop is well-ventilated but free from direct drafts. A thick layer of bedding, like pine shavings, not only provides insulation but also gives them a soft place to roost. I’ve noticed my Cochins love to snuggle together in the colder evenings, a testament to their social nature and their need for warmth. Hydration is another critical aspect, even in winter. While the original post highlighted the importance of corn for energy, don't forget fresh, unfrozen water. I use a heated waterer to ensure they always have access to liquid, as dehydration can be just as dangerous as cold. It's a small investment that makes a huge difference. When it comes to diet, variety is key, even with corn as a winter boost. My chocolate mottled Cochins enjoy a balanced diet of high-quality layer feed throughout the year. In winter, I might add some extra treats like scratch grains (in moderation) or even some leftover cooked veggies to supplement their energy needs. It’s all about providing that easily digestible fuel to keep their internal furnaces burning. I've found that a varied diet keeps them active, healthy, and their feathers looking absolutely splendid! Their small size actually makes them quite efficient in terms of space, but they still appreciate room to forage and dust bathe. Even in winter, on warmer, sunny days, I let my bobtail bantam Cochins out for a supervised run. Dust bathing is vital for feather health and parasite control, so I keep a sheltered area with sand or a dust bath mixture available year-round. It’s quite entertaining to watch them fluff up and wiggle in the dust – pure chicken joy! In my experience, these Cochins aren't just pretty faces; they have distinct personalities. They're usually very friendly and can become quite tame with regular interaction, making them a joy to have around children too. Observing their behavior daily helps me understand their needs. If I see a chocolate mottled Cochin looking a bit ruffled or less active, it’s usually a sign to check their environment or diet. Caring for them has been a rewarding journey, and seeing them thrive, especially through a tough winter, brings a lot of satisfaction.
