Caring for baby chicks.

Raising baby chicks requires proper care to ensure they grow into healthy adult chickens. Here’s a quick guide:

1. Warmth 🔥

• Use a heat lamp or brooder plate.

• Temperature: 95°F (35°C) the first week, then reduce by 5°F each week until they are fully feathered (~6 weeks).

2. Food & Water 🥣

• Feed: Starter crumble (20-24% protein) for the first 6-8 weeks.

🐣 Water: Always provide clean, fresh water. Add electrolytes for weak chicks.

3. Bedding 🏠

🐣 Use pine shavings (avoid cedar) or paper towels for the first few days.

🐣 Keep it dry and clean to prevent disease.

4. Space 📏

🏠 Start with ½ sq. ft. per chick and increase as they grow.

🏠 Provide a secure brooder to protect from predators.

5. Health & Care ❤️

🌱 Watch for pasty butt (clean with warm water if needed).

🌱 Handle gently to tame them early.

🌱 Keep their area draft-free but well ventilated.

... Read moreBrooding baby chicks successfully is the foundation for a healthy flock, and it’s an experience I’ve cherished with every batch of fluffy newcomers! While the basics of warmth, food, and water are crucial, I've learned a few extra tips and tricks that really make a difference in raising baby chicks confidently. First, let's talk more about the brooder setup itself. Beyond just a heat source, the location of your brooder is key. I always choose a safe, draft-free spot indoors – a spare room, garage, or even a large bathroom can work. This protects them from predators (yes, even house cats can be curious!) and sudden temperature drops. I start with a large plastic tote or a dedicated brooder box, ensuring there's plenty of room. Remember, those tiny chicks grow fast, so having a plan to expand their space, or move them to a larger brooder, is essential. Overcrowding can lead to stress, pecking, and health issues. A good rule of thumb I follow is to always have more space than you think they need! When it comes to warmth, while heat lamps are common, I’ve found brooder plates to be a fantastic alternative. They mimic a mother hen, allowing chicks to huddle underneath for warmth when needed, and move away when they're too hot. This natural behavior helps regulate their temperature much better than an overhead lamp, which can sometimes overheat the entire brooder. If you do use a heat lamp, always have a thermometer at chick level to accurately monitor the temperature, not just the ambient air above. A classic trick is observing chick behavior: if they're huddled directly under the lamp, they're cold; if they're spread out and avoiding the lamp, they're too hot; if they're spread evenly and happily chirping, the temperature is just right. Now, for food and water, cleanliness can't be stressed enough. I use small chick feeders and waterers that are less likely to be pooped in or tipped over. For the water, I often add a tiny amount of apple cider vinegar (raw, unfiltered) to their water a few times a week once they're a little older – not for the first few days – as it’s believed to help with gut health. Always provide fresh, clean water that’s not too cold. A common mistake I made early on was not cleaning the waterer enough; it gets dirty fast! Regarding bedding, pine shavings are my go-to, but ensure they are not dusty. I change the top layer of soiled bedding daily and do a full bedding change at least twice a week, sometimes more if it gets damp quickly. Wet bedding is a breeding ground for bacteria and can lead to respiratory problems or diseases like coccidiosis. Keeping the brooder dry and well-ventilated (but still draft-free!) is paramount for healthy chick development. Finally, don't forget the importance of observation. Spend time watching your chicks. Are they active? Are they eating and drinking? Are their droppings normal? Early detection of issues like pasty butt (which can be a sign of stress or digestive upset) or lethargy can prevent more serious problems. Gently handling them a few times a day not only helps tame them but also allows you to check them over individually. Raising baby chicks is incredibly rewarding, and with these extra steps, you’ll be well on your way to a thriving flock!

Caring for chicks is honestly super simple! This is my 2nd spring having chicks. All you need is something to put them in (right now I have a tote until my diy brooder is done. last year I used a dog cage!) Heat is a MUST as they can not regulate their own body temp. I like using the clamp heat la

How to take care of baby chicks?
1. Have a safe area for chicks. Crate or large tote. 2. Heat lamp for new babies especially if you have less than 4! Chicks will warm with body heat the more you have, they love to huddle! 3. Fresh water source! 4. Chick feed 5. Watch them grow and love on them daily to help them warm up to you
