Let’s talk about the Mottled varieties in Silkies.
You won’t find me in the show ring that’s a personal choice rooted deep in my history, but make no mistake, I am working my tail off to improve this variety for the next generation. My goal is to leave something amazing for my grandkids and great grandkids to continue.
Here at Jersey Silkies, the philosophy is simple Foundation First. 🏗️ It’s easy to get distracted by fluff and feathers, but I’m looking past that right now. We need to lock in the essentials first 1 Pitch black skin 2 Dark eyes 3 Proper type. Once we have that solid base, the rest will follow. This black mottled pullet is one of our winter grow outs. She has a lot of white in her crest, but more importantly, she represents the deep black pigment we are striving to standardize. Maybe one day these birds will get the recognition they deserve, but for now, we keep building, one generation at a time.
