Bathing chickens

Bathing backyard chickens like Cochins, Bantams, and Bobtails can be a rewarding experience when done carefully. I’ve found that preparation is key: gather all supplies beforehand, such as a shallow tub of lukewarm water, gentle poultry shampoo or mild dish soap, towels, and a warm, draft-free drying area. Start by gently placing your chicken in the water to help them become comfortable with the bath. I usually keep the bathing time short—just enough to clean dirt and debris—because chickens can quickly become stressed. The 'before' stage often shows dusty or matted feathers, especially for breeds like Cochins with dense plumage. After bathing, it’s important to rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue, which can irritate their skin. Drying is equally important—using towels to gently pat the feathers dry and then placing the chickens in a warm spot helps prevent chilling. Watching my bobtails and bantams after their baths, their feathers look noticeably fluffier and cleaner, and they seem more comfortable. Regular baths help maintain the health of your birds by reducing parasites and keeping their skin in good condition. Just be mindful not to over-bathe as it can strip natural oils from their feathers. With patience and consistency, bathing backyard chickens becomes part of their care routine that benefits both their hygiene and your enjoyment of raising them.
