Ruthie’s first time on the paddleboard experiencing the beauty the ocean brings.
Some curious baby dolphins startled Ruthie and she got her first swim in 😅. My mom said these new babies have no fear and are very curious so hopefully soon Ruthie will get some face-to-face time.
Then we got a little show from their mama.
She also got to meet her first manatee— we didn’t catch that on camera as he was busy grazing on seagrass and only came to the surface for a quick breath of air. Even so, he was not timid by us or Ruthie.
Experiencing wildlife up close can be unforgettable, especially for first-timers like Ruthie on her paddleboard adventure. Baby dolphins are known for their playful curiosity, often approaching new visitors without fear, which can sometimes startle even the most prepared paddlers. Their playful nature offers a unique opportunity to witness natural behaviors just feet away, as Ruthie did when surprised by their sudden appearance. Mother dolphins often join their curious calves, providing a majestic show that emphasizes family bonds and the complexities of marine life. Watching a dolphin mother and her babies interact can offer insights into dolphin communication and nurturing habits, making the experience educational and heartwarming. On this trip, Ruthie also encountered a manatee—a gentle giant of the ocean often found grazing on seagrass beds. These shy but curious creatures typically surface for air quietly, allowing paddlers close encounters when approached respectfully. Manatees contribute significantly to marine ecosystems by maintaining healthy seagrass beds, which are vital for water quality and provide habitats for other marine species. Paddleboarding in such rich wildlife environments not only offers physical exercise but also fosters a deeper appreciation and connection to marine wildlife. Observing and respecting these animals in their natural habitat encourages conservation efforts and promotes environmental awareness. For those planning similar adventures, it’s important to keep a safe and respectful distance, avoid sudden movements, and minimize noise to prevent disturbing the animals. This ensures that both the paddler and wildlife can enjoy a safe and memorable encounter. Ruthie's experience highlights the joy and wonder that come from immersing oneself in nature and encountering its inhabitants firsthand.
